Chapter 6 - The Midnight Waltz of the Damned

The grand ballroom was a breathtaking spectacle of wealth and excess. Two hundred of the city's wealthiest elites gasped as Grace Holloway—the estate’s dismissed head housekeeper, wearing a borrowed, poorly hemmed navy dress—sprinted across the gleaming marble ballroom, her canvas sneakers squeaking faintly against the polished stone. Billionaire Ethan Caldwell stood completely frozen next to his glamorous fiancée, Sabrina, who was draped in forty thousand dollars worth of imported European diamonds that caught the amber chandelier light. Just a few feet away, his nine-year-old traumatized niece, Lily, cowered against the carved mahogany base of the grand staircase, her thin shoulders shaking uncontrollably. Derek, the estate's security chief and Sabrina's half-brother, had materialized from the shadows near the service corridor. His thick hand was thrust deep inside his tailored wool jacket, the cold glint of a medical syringe catching the candlelight. He was moving with terrifying, silent speed toward the cowering child, intent on administering a forced sedative before the crowd noticed her presence. He never reached her. Grace, channeling every ounce of her former collegiate taekwondo training, launched herself violently into the air off the edge of a velvet-upholstered divan. Her body cut through the ballroom's heavy, champagne-scented air in a textbook flying side-kick. Her heel connected brutally with Derek’s forearm with a sickening crack that echoed over the music. The heavy medical syringe spiraled wildly through the air, tumbling end-over-end before landing squarely in a silver ice bucket filled with vintage champagne bottles. Derek crashed heavily into a glittering, eight-foot tower of crystal champagne glasses, sending thousands of crystal shards shattering across the marble floor in a thunderous explosion of sound and glittering debris. The orchestra’s waltz died instantly, replaced by a deafening, stunned silence that hung heavy over the room. Grace landed lightly on her feet, standing barefoot on one side of the shattered glass, breathing heavily, acting as an unyielding human shield between the dangerous shadows of the room and the terrified little girl.
