Chapter 7 - The Mask Slips

The silence in the ballroom was absolute, broken only by the soft, rhythmic dripping of vintage champagne trickling from the shattered crystal tower onto the polished marble. Two hundred elite guests stood paralyzed, their champagne flutes frozen halfway to their mouths, staring in absolute horror at the scene unfolding before them. Sabrina Vance was the first to recover her composure, though her face had lost every ounce of its practiced, porcelain perfection. Her eyes widened in feral panic, and she instantly pivoted into high-society crisis-management mode, her voice dripping with venomous theatricality. "Security!" Sabrina shrieked, pointing a trembling, diamond-ringed finger directly at Grace. "This unhinged, violent maniac is a disgruntled former employee! She broke in! She’s attacking my brother! Someone remove this psychotic thief before she hurts someone!" Several of the male guests stepped forward, looking toward Ethan Caldwell for direction. But Ethan did not move. He stood like a statue carved from ice, his gaze locked not on the chaotic wreckage of the champagne tower, nor on Derek—who was groaning and clutching his fractured forearm on the floor—but entirely on his nine-year-old niece. Lily had not uttered a single audible sound in two full calendar years. Ever since the devastating car crash that tore her family apart, her vocal cords had remained locked behind an impenetrable wall of trauma and fear. But now, something inside the little girl had fundamentally shifted. Staring directly at the silver ice bucket where the deadly syringe lay half-submerged in melting ice, Lily slowly pushed herself up from the base of the grand staircase. She pointed a small, trembling finger first at the groaning security chief on the floor, and then, with devastating, unsparing precision, directly at the woman standing beside Ethan Caldwell. "He puts it in my milk," Lily’s fragile, frightened voice cut through the stunned silence of the ballroom like a razor-sharp blade. The entire room gasped collectively. Before anyone could draw a breath, the child pointed her finger straight at the future Mrs. Caldwell. "She tells him how much." Ethan Caldwell’s face drained of every drop of color, turning a ghastly, ash-gray shade. The foundation of his entire world had just collapsed in a single, devastating sentence.
