Chapter 11 - The Interception at the State Line

The powerful V8 engine of my father's truck roared as we crested the slight incline of the interstate overpass, the morning mist lifting just enough to reveal a row of commercial vehicles clustered near the highway rest stop ahead.
My eyes remained locked on the glowing blue dot of the digital tracker pulsing rhythmically on my smartphone screen, showing the target vehicle parked directly beside the vending pavilion.
My father gripped the passenger side grab handle with white knuckles, his lips pressed into a thin, grim line as the dark sedan came into view beneath the green highway sign indicating the state border.
"There," I muttered, easing off the accelerator and signaling smoothly into the decelerating lane without drawing unnecessary attention from passing morning commuters.
I parked the truck twenty yards away, positioning it at a precise tactical angle that blocked her potential exit vector while giving us a clear view of the driver's side door.
Marlene was sitting inside the sedan with the engine running, bent over her center console as she frantically scribbled signatures onto a fresh stack of legal authorization forms spread across the steering wheel.
She was trying to rush the final notarization paperwork before the credit union manager could alert federal authorities and freeze the remaining equity transfer for good.
I turned off the ignition, popped open the truck door, and stepped out onto the asphalt with the calm, methodical precision of an officer executing a standard field perimeter check.
My father followed closely behind me, his boots crunching against the loose gravel as we walked purposefully toward the idling sedan under the grey morning sky.
When Marlene glanced up in her rearview mirror and saw my uniform jacket and stern face approaching her window, the pen slipped entirely from her fingers and rolled down onto the floor mat.

She shoved the car door open with a panicked jerk, stumbling backward against the side panel as if trying to physically push herself through the metal to escape our approach.
"You can't do this!" she shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterical disbelief as she looked past me toward my father with wide, terrified eyes. "I'm still legally his wife!"
