Chapter 12 - The Final Signature

"Not for much longer, you aren't," my father said, stepping up beside me with a newfound dignity and resolution that completely silenced her frantic protests.

He pulled a folded manila envelope from his jacket pocket—a set of emergency separation and asset protection papers we had printed out before leaving the house—and tossed them onto her hood.

"Sign the deed relinquishment and the immediate asset freeze waiver right now, Marlene, or my daughter makes the phone call to the federal prosecutor," my father commanded coldly.

Marlene stared down at the documents, her eyes darting frantically toward the highway as if hoping a passing patrol car would magically stop to rescue her from her own crimes.

Realizing she was entirely cornered, with zero allies left to manipulate and no loopholes left to exploit, her shoulders collapsed in total, miserable defeat.

She snatched the pen from the floorboard, her hand trembling violently as she scrawled her signature across the dotted lines of the release forms while bitter tears rolled down her cheeks.

I leaned over, picked up the executed documents with a gloved hand, and carefully inspected every single line to ensure the legal waivers were completely airtight and undisputed.

"Smart choice," I said flatly, sliding the papers back into the manila envelope and securing them safely inside my tactical jacket.

"Now, take your car and keep driving south," I added, stepping back to give her vehicle clearance. "If you ever come within fifty miles of my father or his home again, I won't bother with warnings."

Without uttering another syllable, Marlene scrambled back into the driver's seat, slammed the door shut, and peeled out of the rest stop with tires screeching against the pavement.

We watched the dark sedan disappear into the distance, swallowed up by the morning traffic heading deeper into South Carolina, leaving us standing in the quiet open air.

My father let out a long, shuddering breath that sounded like years of accumulated weight finally lifting from his chest, and he offered me a small, genuine smile.
