Chapter 7 - The Ultimatum

The living room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence that was only punctuated by Marlene's shallow, ragged breathing against her palms.

My father slowly walked forward, his legs trembling as he lowered himself into a nearby armchair, looking older and more frail than he had ever appeared in my entire life.

"Marlene, look at me," my father said, his voice cracking with a heartbreaking blend of sorrow and profound betrayal that finally forced her to lower her hands.

She looked up at him with tear-stained cheeks, opening her mouth to spin another fabricated excuse, but my father raised a single calloused hand to stop her dead in her tracks.

"Don't," he whispered hoarsely. "Just... don't say another word. I heard what that man said, and I saw the bank logs Claire showed me earlier in the workshop."

Leo cleared his throat loudly, breaking the marital misery unfolding in front of him, clearly more concerned about his own safety than the collapse of their household.

"Look, lady, I don't care about your family drama," Leo said, standing up from the sofa and glaring directly at me. "I just need my debt cleared, or I'm dead meat."

I turned my gaze slowly toward him, letting a cold, humorless smile touch the corners of my mouth as I pulled a document folder from under my arm and dropped it onto the coffee table.

"You won't be getting a single dime from my accounts, Mr. Miller," I said, my voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing register that made him instinctively step back.

"In fact, the moment this conversation ends, I'm forwarding these complete financial forensic files to the Charlotte Police Department and my legal division downtown."

Leo's face turned completely pale, the tough-guy facade instantly melting away as he realized he was staring down the barrel of federal wire fraud and identity theft charges.

"You can't do that!" Marlene shrieked, scrambling up from the floor and grabbing onto my sleeve with desperate, claw-like fingers. "She'll put us both away for years, Leo!"

I yanked my arm away from her grip with a sharp, crisp jerk, stepping back to create immediate physical distance between us as if she carried a contagious disease.

"Don't touch me," I warned, my eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "You crossed into federal jurisdiction the moment you attempted to tamper with a military service member's banking credentials."

"So here is your absolute final choice, Marlene: you pack your bags, clear your personal belongings out of this house by sunup, and sign a full legal confession."

"If you do that, I'll hold off on filing the criminal paperwork immediately to give you a chance to surrender yourself voluntarily to local authorities."

"If you refuse, or if you try to pull another stunt, I'll ensure every single charge sticks, and you can explain your financial genius to a federal judge from behind bars."
