Chapter 5 - The Midnight Visitor

The sun dipped below the tree line, casting long, bruised shadows across the suburban neighborhood, wrapping the house in an uneasy, deceptive stillness that felt like the calm before a hurricane.

After my conversation with my father in the workshop, Marlene had kept entirely to the master bedroom, no doubt licking her wounds and figuring out her next desperate maneuver.

I sat at the kitchen island, reviewing the digital forensic reports my JAG legal advisor had compiled and sent back to my secure terminal over the encrypted satellite link.

The paperwork was airtight: unauthorized credit inquiries, attempted digital intrusions, and a paper trail pointing directly to Marlene's personal electronic devices and private email accounts.

It was more than enough evidence to file criminal charges for identity theft and attempted financial fraud, but I wanted to handle this within the family first if she had an ounce of sense left.

Around eleven o'clock at night, just as the neighborhood had settled into a deep, dreamless slumber, a sharp, urgent rapping echoed loudly against the front entryway door.

My father was already asleep in the back bedroom, exhausted from the emotional toll of the day's confrontations, so I pushed myself up from the kitchen stool and walked briskly down the hall.

I flipped on the porch light, peered through the small brass peephole, and felt my eyebrows knit together in confusion when I saw a towering, broad-shouldered man standing on the doormat.

He was wearing a dark leather jacket, his face partially obscured by the shadows of the porch overhang, looking distinctly out of place in our quiet, middle-class cul-de-sac.

I unlocked the deadbolt, pulled the heavy wooden door open a mere six inches while keeping the security chain securely latched, and leveled my best command voice at the stranger.

"Can I help you?" I asked crisply, my eyes scanning his posture for any hidden weapons or aggressive body language that might signal an immediate tactical threat.

The man blinked in surprise, clearly not expecting a high-ranking military officer answering the door with combat-ready alertness at midnight in a sleepy North Carolina suburb.

"I'm looking for Marlene," the man said, his voice deep and rough around the edges, carrying a nervous edge that suggested he was knee-deep in trouble and looking for a bailout.

"Marlene Donovan?" I pressed, my hand gripping the edge of the door tighter as the pieces of the puzzle started snapping together in my mind with terrifying clarity.

May you like

"Yeah," he replied, shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot. "She told me she had secured the funds from her stepdaughter's military account to settle my debt tonight, and I'm here to collect."

Before I could issue another word, the sound of hurried footsteps slapped against the hallway floor behind me, and Marlene appeared in her nightgown, her face drained of all color.
