Chapter 1 - The Poisoned Cup

“Daddy, no! Don’t drink it!” The delicate porcelain cup stopped less than an inch from Ethan Blackwood’s lips. The steam from the Earl Grey blend curled into the cold air of the dining room. Seven-year-old Lily ran across the gleaming marble floor, wearing her faded yellow pajamas. Her tiny, trembling hands grabbed his wrist with astonishing force, causing hot tea to spill over the gold-rimmed edge and splash onto the priceless mahogany table.
Ethan stared down at her, completely stunned. The grand dining hall plunged into a suffocating silence. No child had called him Daddy in seven years. Not since the darkest night of his entire existence, when doctors told him that his beautiful, pregnant wife and newborn daughter had perished in a catastrophic hospital fire that burned his world to ashes. Behind Lily, the housekeeper went completely pale. Nora stood frozen near the arched kitchen entrance, one hand pressed hard against her chest as her breathing became shallow and erratic. “That’s… that’s…” Nora stammered, unable to finish her sentence.
Lily slowly turned her head and looked at the older woman. The fear in the little girl’s eyes changed instantly, morphing into sheer, unadulterated terror. She immediately released Ethan’s hand and took a trembling step backward, shrinking into herself. “I’m sorry, sir,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “It’s nothing. Really.”
Ethan slowly lowered the antique cup to the saucer, his heart hammering against his ribs. “What did you call me?” he asked, his voice a low rumble. Lily stared down at the intricate patterns of the marble floor and whispered, “Sir.” Ethan shook his head. “No. Before that.” Nora hurried forward, her heels clicking frantically against the stone. “She has terrible nightmares, Mr. Blackwood. She becomes deeply confused when she wakes up in the dark.”
Lily was supposedly Nora’s orphaned niece, who had lived in the servants’ wing of Ethan’s massive estate for almost two years. Ethan often saw her reading quietly near the back staircase or drawing colorful pictures at the kitchen island. She was always exceptionally quiet, always painfully polite, and strangely, hauntingly familiar. But every single time he tried to speak with her, Nora magically appeared, making an excuse to pull the child away. That night, however, Lily had not looked confused at all. She had looked terrified that he might actually swallow the tea.
Ethan’s billionaire instincts flared to life. He reached under the table and pressed the hidden security button. A heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the mansion as the reinforced doors locked automatically. “Nobody leaves,” Ethan commanded. Nora’s face tightened into a mask of panic. “Sir, that really isn’t necessary.” Ethan looked at the untouched cup of steaming liquid. “Drink it, Nora.” She took a desperate step back, stammering that she didn't drink tea and that it was his usual evening blend. “Then one tiny sip shouldn’t hurt you,” he replied coldly.

As Nora’s hands began shaking violently, Ethan pulled his phone from his tailored suit pocket and called his private on-call physician. Within twenty agonizing minutes, the tea was transported to the mansion’s state-of-the-art medical room. Dr. Samuel Hayes returned to the dining room carrying the porcelain cup inside a sealed, clear evidence bag. His expression was incredibly grave. “There’s enough liquid digitalis in this tea to stop a horse's heart, let alone yours, Ethan.”
The massive dining room became deadly silent. Nora suddenly spun around and ran toward the service hallway, scrambling wildly. Two heavily armed security officers stepped out from the shadows, catching her effortlessly before she even reached the stairs. She began screaming hysterically, crying that she had been forced and had no choice. Ethan ignored her screams, slowly kneeling on the floor to be exactly at Lily's eye level. “Sweetheart,” he said softly, “how did you know?” Tears rolled down her pale, chubby cheeks. “I saw Aunt Nora put clear drops in it from a tiny glass bottle. She said if I ever talked to you, she would send me back to the dark room.”
