Chapter 5 - The Truth Unearthed

Ethan walked toward the bed as if approaching a mirage, terrified that she would vanish into smoke. Dropping to his knees, he reached out with a trembling, blood-stained hand and gently brushed a stray lock of hair from Amelia’s scarred cheek. Her skin was warm. “Amelia,” he choked out, tears finally breaking free. “My beautiful Amelia. I’m here. I found you.”

Marcus quietly dragged the unconscious Victor out to the hallway and called the authorities. Within minutes, Dr. Hayes rushed into the room with his mobile ICU team. “She’s heavily sedated, Ethan, but she’s stable,” Dr. Hayes said. “He’s been keeping her in a medically induced twilight state for years. We need to wake her up slowly to detox her system.” Ethan immediately commanded them to move her to the estate and set up a full hospital suite in the master bedroom.

As the medics carefully transferred Amelia to the stretcher, the police arrived and discovered a hidden safe in the clinic's office. Inside, they found decades of horrific evidence: meticulous ledgers of Victor's crimes, bribes to the hospital fire inspector, payoffs to board members, and the funding for this illegal black-site clinic used to keep Amelia as ultimate leverage. The depth of his absolute depravity was documented in black and white.

Ethan rode in the back of the medical transport, never letting go of his wife's hand. When they arrived back at the sprawling Blackwood estate, the golden light of dawn was just peeking over the manicured gardens. Lily was asleep on the massive sofa in the living room, but woke up as the paramedics wheeled the stretcher in. She saw her father walking beside it and slowly approached the sleeping woman with the scarred face.

“Is that...?” Lily whispered. Ethan lifted her into his strong arms. “Yes, baby. That’s Mommy. We brought her home.” Lily rested her small head against Ethan’s shoulder and placed her tiny hand over Amelia’s. For the first time in seven long years, the three of them were under the same roof. The nightmare was ending, but Ethan knew there was still one massive loose end to tie up. The sun was up. It was time for the board meeting.
