Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Clinic

The convoy of black SUVs skidded to a violent halt in front of a decaying, rust-covered warehouse that looked completely abandoned. But Ethan’s security chief, Marcus, pointed to the fresh tire tracks in the mud indicating an underground entrance. Ethan didn't wait for tactical formation; he pulled a heavy steel crowbar from the trunk and ran toward the reinforced steel door hidden behind a dumpster.

Marcus attached a small breaching charge to the locking mechanism. A muffled explosion blew the heavy door inward, setting off blaring alarms inside the hidden compound. Red strobe lights painted the concrete hallways as two rogue mercenaries rushed around the corner. Before they could raise their weapons, Marcus’s team took them down with precision strikes. Ethan sprinted down the sterile white corridor, checking the room numbers against the layout he saw on the phone.

He reached the end of the hall where a heavy, biometric-locked door stood in his way. Through the small reinforced glass window, he saw Amelia. Standing right beside her IV line was Victor, with the needle pressed directly into the rubber port. Victor looked up at the sound of the alarms, his eyes widening in shock as he saw Ethan through the glass. As Victor’s thumb moved to press the plunger, Ethan launched his entire body weight forward, kicking the door. When the metal held, Ethan let out a primal roar, grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher, and smashed it directly into the reinforced glass.

The glass shattered into a million sparkling pieces. Ethan reached his bloody arm through the jagged hole, unlocked the door, and burst in just as Victor lunged forward to inject the poison. Ethan tackled his uncle to the cold linoleum floor, sending the syringe flying to shatter harmlessly against the wall. “You’re supposed to be dead!” Victor screamed, his face twisted in ugly desperation.

“You took seven years of my life!” Ethan roared back, grabbing Victor by the collar and driving his fist into his uncle's face. All the pain, the mourning, and the empty holidays poured into every strike until Victor went limp. Marcus rushed in, securing the defeated man. Ethan let go of his uncle's ruined shirt, his chest heaving and his hands covered in blood. He slowly turned around to face the hospital bed, where the machines were still beeping in a steady, reassuring rhythm. The poison had never reached her veins.
