Chapter 10 - The Broken Cookie Restored and the New Dawn in Manhattan

The morning sun rose over Manhattan, cutting through the melting snowdrifts and painting the glass towers of the city in brilliant strokes of gold.

Inside the grand kitchen of the Moretti estate, the atmosphere was entirely transformed.

The air smelled of fresh pancakes, brewed coffee, and sweet maple syrup.

At the center island sat Sofia, swinging her little legs happily from her stool, wearing a bright pink apron and holding a fresh, unbroken bear-shaped sugar cookie.

Standing beside her was Maya Harper, looking healthier after a hot meal and a full night of sleep, laughing as Sofia showed her how to decorate the cookie with blue frosting.

Across the kitchen, leaning against the marble counter with a mug of coffee in his hand, Alessandro Moretti watched the scene with a quiet, contented smile.

Footsteps echoed softly from the archway.

Grace Harper walked into the kitchen, wearing a comfortable cream-colored sweater—her own clothes, washed and pressed—her amber-brown eyes shining with a radiant, unbroken light.

She stopped beside Moretti, looking at the two sisters and the little girl who had brought them all together through a blizzard and a broken cookie.

“You know,” Grace said quietly, bumping her shoulder gently against his.

“You’re not nearly as terrifying as everyone in New York says you are, Mr. Moretti.”

Moretti turned his head, his stormy gray eyes meeting hers with a warmth that completely melted the winter chill.

“Call me Alessandro, Grace,” he murmured, setting his coffee mug down on the counter.

“And as for terrifying... let’s just say I have a very persuasive four-year-old daughter who taught me how to lower my defenses.”

Sofia looked up from her sugar cookie across the room, catching their eyes, and flashed a brilliant, conspiratorial grin before holding the bear-shaped treat up in the air like a trophy.
