Chapter 11 - The Shadow of the Federal Indictments and the Return of the Board

The golden sunlight streaming through the massive glass windows of the Moretti estate’s private library felt warm, but the documents resting on the polished mahogany desk told a chillingly cold story.

Grace Harper stood beside the desk, her fingers resting lightly on a stack of federal deposition transcripts detailing the complete dismantling of Victor Vance’s criminal conspiracy.

Across from her, Alessandro Moretti leaned back in his leather chair, his stormy gray eyes scanning the final pages with the detached, surgical precision of a general reviewing the unconditional surrender of a defeated enemy army.

Maya Harper sat across the room on the oversized sofa, sipping a cup of herbal tea while keeping a watchful, protective eye on Sofia, who was busy building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks on the rug.

“The U.S. Attorney’s office just signed off on the immunity deal for Maya,” Alessandro said, his deep voice breaking the quiet hum of the room as he set the papers down.

“Her testimony regarding the phantom shell corporations and the illegal pharmaceutical shipments is airtight. Victor’s out-of-state backers are already scrambling to distance themselves. By tomorrow morning, the federal indictments will be public.”

Grace let out a long, shuddering breath, the last lingering tension leaving her shoulders.

“It’s really over,” she murmured, looking down at her hands.

“The auditing firm is gone, Victor is facing three consecutive life sentences without parole, and Maya doesn't have to look over her shoulder every time a car passes by on the street.”

Maya looked up from the sofa, offering a soft, tired smile.

“It’s over, Grace,” Maya echoed gently.

“And it’s all thanks to a four-year-old mastermind who decided to adopt a freezing stranger in the middle of a historic blizzard.”

Sofia paused her block-building, looking up at the mention of her name with wide, innocent blue eyes.

“Are we talking about my cookie?” Sofia asked brightly, tilting her head.

Alessandro’s stern, imposing features instantly softened into that rare, unguarded smile that only his daughter ever got to see.

“We’re talking about your cookie, peanut,” Alessandro replied, walking over to the rug and dropping down onto one knee beside her.

“The most expensive cookie in the history of New York City.”

Sofia giggled, throwing her arms around his neck and planting a sticky, frosting-covered kiss right on his cheek.

Grace watched the two of them interact, a warm, fluttering sensation blooming deep inside her chest—a feeling she hadn't allowed herself to experience since before her life fell apart.

She was no longer the invisible, freezing ghost sleeping on a park bench.

She had a home, a sister who was safe, and a place right here in the eye of the storm.
