Chapter 9 - Return to the Mansion and the Sister’s Reunion

The private library of the Moretti estate was warm, bright, and filled with the comforting crackle of the cherry log fire.
Grace Harper sat on the edge of the leather sofa, her hands wrapped tightly around a fresh cup of hot chamomile tea, her eyes fixed on the grandfather clock in the corner.
3:15 AM.
She had spent the last three hours pacing the room, fighting off panic, while Sofia slept peacefully upstairs in the nursery, completely unaware of the war being fought in the dark on her behalf.
The heavy oak door of the library swung open.
Alessandro Moretti stepped inside.
His dark charcoal sweater was dusted with snow, his face marked by the bitter cold of the night, but his eyes—though tired—carried a different kind of light than the cold fury he had worn when he left.
Grace stood up instantly, setting her teacup down so hard the porcelain rattled against the saucer.
“Where have you been?” she demanded, her voice shaking with adrenaline.
“Is everyone alright? Did you find... did you find anything out about Maya?”
Moretti walked slowly toward her, stopping a few feet away.
He didn't answer with words immediately.
Instead, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted tablet, tapping the screen twice before holding it out toward her.
Grace stared at the screen.
It was a live security feed from the estate’s private guest house near the courtyard.
The door on the screen opened.
A woman walked out into the harsh outdoor lighting—exhausted, pale, wearing an oversized gray hoodie, with dark circles under her eyes, but unmistakably alive.
Grace’s breath caught in her throat.
A choked, disbelieving cry escaped her lips.
“Maya...” she whispered, her hands flying up to cover her mouth as hot tears streamed down her face.
“She’s alive?”
“Arthur’s team traced her digital ping using the decryption keys we recovered tonight,” Moretti said softly, his voice gentle—a tone he had never used with anyone outside of his daughter.
“She’s been hiding in a secure safehouse in upstate New York, waiting for the right moment to surface. When she saw the news of Victor’s arrest breaking on the emergency broadcast networks... she came home.”
Before Moretti could finish the sentence, the library doors flew open wide.
A woman stumbled into the room, her hair disheveled, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and overwhelming relief.
“Grace!” the woman cried out.
“Oh, God... Grace!”
“Maya!” Grace screamed.
She sprinted across the Persian rug, colliding with her sister in a desperate, bone-crushing embrace that sent both of them tumbling onto the plush wool carpet, weeping uncontrollably as they held onto each other for the first time in eighteen months.

Alessandro Moretti stood quietly by the fireplace, watching the two sisters hold each other in the warm amber light of the hearth.
He reached up, unbuttoning the top of his dark sweater, feeling a strange, unfamiliar lightness settle into his chest—the first true peace he had known since the night his wife died.
