Chapter 12 - The Confession in the Vault

The subterranean archive vault was illuminated only by the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb.
Michael Dawson sat on the cold concrete floor, his expensive Milanese suit wrinkled and stained with dust.
His hands were cuffed behind his back to a steel wall bracket.
Beside him, Vanessa Bellini paced back and forth across the narrow floor like a caged tigress.
Her green velvet dress was ruined, and her makeup was smeared across her cheeks from hours of frustrated weeping.
"He's going to leave us down here to rot," Vanessa hissed, glaring down at Michael.
"This is all your fault, Michael!"
"My fault?" Michael snapped back, raising his head with bloodshot eyes.
"You were the one who insisted on stealing the sister's letters!"
"You were the one who couldn't even manage a simple maid without causing a public scene at the dinner table!"
"Shut your mouth!" she screamed, lunging toward him before the steel chain of her own ankle cuff jerked her back.
The heavy vault door swung open with a loud metallic clank.
I stepped into the cool enclosure, followed closely by Daniel.
The bickering stopped instantly as both prisoners turned their terrified eyes toward me.
I walked slowly toward them, stopping two feet away from the concrete bench.
"I hope the accommodations meet your expectations," I said, my voice devoid of emotion.
Michael struggled to his feet, leaning against the cold stone wall.
"Luca, let's be rational about this," Michael pleaded, his arrogant facade completely shattered.
"We grew up together."
"We shared rooms at Georgetown."
"You can't just bury us alive down here."
"You're right, Michael," I replied smoothly.
"I am not going to bury you alive."
Vanessa’s eyes lit up with a pathetic flicker of hope.
"You're... you're going to let us go?" she breathed.
"I am going to hand you both over to federal authorities in New York," I corrected her, watching their faces turn pale.
"The FBI's organized crime division has been building a racketeering case against your syndicate associates for two years."
"I have already compiled every financial record, wire transfer, and audio recording implicating your involvement."
"You'll spend the rest of your natural lives behind maximum-security glass."
"You can't do that!" Vanessa shrieked, throwing herself toward my feet.
"Luca, please! I love you! It was all Michael's scheme!"
I stepped back smoothly, avoiding her touch as if she were a venomous insect.
"You loved my bank accounts, Vanessa," I said coldly.
"You loved the title of mistress of the Moretti estate."
"But you made one fatal miscalculation."
"What miscalculation?" she sobbed hysterically.
"You underestimated the loyalty of a simple maid who needed her paycheck to save her brother."
I turned toward Daniel and gave a single, curt nod.
"Pack them into the transport van."
"The midnight flight to New York is waiting."

As Daniel and two guards dragged them screaming toward the open vault door, I took one last look at the wreckage of their ambition.
Greed had built their prison, and arrogance had locked the door.
