Chapter 5 - A Web of Blood and Wire

The first pale gray light of dawn broke through the heavy velvet curtains of my study.

I had not slept for a single second.

A cold cup of black espresso sat untouched beside the stack of Rebecca’s unsealed letters.

On the main computer terminal, Daniel had brought up the live surveillance feeds across Chicago.

At 5:15 AM, Frankie had confirmed Rebecca’s safe arrival at the Lake Geneva compound.

She was currently eating a hot breakfast under the protection of six veteran Moretti soldiers.

At 5:45 AM, Daniel’s team had successfully extracted Leo Miller from the North Side care facility.

The boy was now settled in a private luxury suite at our Oak Brook medical facility, attended by two private neurologists.

Hannah Miller’s family was secure.

My sister was safe.

The perimeter of my empire was locked down, and the enemy was completely unaware that their leverage had vanished into thin air.

At 6:30 AM, soft footsteps descended the grand spiral staircase in the main foyer.

Daniel immediately switched the monitor to the foyer camera.

Vanessa Bellini was awake.

She wore a pale pink cashmere robe trimmed with silk ribbons, her blonde hair falling in loose, curated curls over her shoulders.

She looked radiant, rested, and utterly victorious.

She carried a small porcelain teacup, moving toward the kitchen with the graceful ease of a queen surveying her domain.

She paused near the pantry door, glancing down the hallway toward the service stairwell where she had battered Hannah yesterday.

A small, self-satisfied smirk played across her lips before she turned and glided toward the study.

I closed the surveillance software with a single keystroke.

I picked up the fountain pen and pretended to review a routine maritime shipping manifest.

Two light, rhythmic taps sounded on the mahogany door.

"Luca, darling?" her melodious voice called through the wood.

"Come in, Vanessa," I replied, my voice perfectly smooth and natural.

The door swung open, and she stepped into the study, bringing a wave of expensive French perfume with her.

She glided over to my desk, leaning down to press a soft, warm kiss against my cheek.

Her lips felt like the kiss of a copperhead snake.

"You were up so early, sweetheart," she purred, running her manicured fingers lightly across the back of my neck.

"Did you spend the entire night reviewing import tariffs?"

"Business never sleeps, Vanessa," I said, offering her a faint, weary smile.

"Especially with the wedding only three weeks away."

She smiled warmly, setting her teacup on the edge of the desk blotter.

"Speaking of which, darling, we need to discuss the household staff."

I leaned back into my leather chair, intertwining my fingers over my stomach.

"What about them?"

Vanessa sighed, tilting her head with an expression of tender, motherly concern.

"I checked on that poor girl, Hannah, this morning."

"Her knee looks dreadful, Luca."

"The house physician says she may have torn a ligament when she tripped."

I kept my eyes locked on her face, admiring the sheer, sociopathic perfection of her acting.

"That is unfortunate," I said quietly.

"Most unfortunate," she agreed, sighing deeply.

"It breaks my heart, but she clearly cannot perform the duties required of this estate."

"I took the liberty of preparing a severance package for her."

She reached into the pocket of her pink robe and produced an envelope containing two thousand dollars in crisp cash.

"We can have Daniel drive her to the transit station this morning."

"She can return to her family, rest, and recover without the strain of our schedule."

"You are remarkably thoughtful, Vanessa," I said, my voice void of any sarcasm.

"I try to be, darling," she said, resting her hip against the side of my desk.

"I only want what is best for our home."

"And for you."

"Of course," I nodded.

"However, I have already reassigned Hannah."

Vanessa’s posture stiffened almost imperceptibly.

Her manicured hand paused on the handle of her teacup.

"You... reassigned her?"

"Yes," I continued smoothly.

"My administrative assistant in the downtown logistics office resigned yesterday morning."

"Hannah has an associate degree in healthcare administration and excellent clerical marks."

"Since she cannot walk the stairs, she will be managing my personal schedule from the ground-floor office."

Vanessa’s eyes flared with a brief, volatile spark of panic.

Her jaw tightened, the muscles beneath her flawless makeup twitching for half a second.

"Luca, that is ridiculous," she laughed, though the sound was tight and strained.

"She is a domestic cleaner, not an executive secretary."

"She doesn't know the first thing about our operations."

"She knows how to follow orders," I said, holding her gaze with unblinking intensity.

"And she doesn't drop things when she is sitting behind a desk."

Vanessa swallowed, her throat moving visibly.

She realized that pushing the issue further would arouse the very suspicion she was trying to avoid.

"If you think that is best, darling," she conceded, forcing her lips back into a smile.

"I simply worry about security."

"You know how delicate your private business can be."

"Nobody understands the delicacy of my business better than I do, Vanessa," I said softly.

Before she could respond, the private telephone on my desk began to buzz.

It was not the encrypted satellite handset; it was the standard landline connected to the front gatehouse.

I lifted the receiver.

"Speak."

"Mr. Moretti," the gate guard announced.

"Mr. Dawson's vehicle has just entered the main driveway."

"He says he arrived early from New York to review the bachelor arrangements."

A cold, electric current surged through my veins.

The serpent had arrived right on schedule.

"Allow him through," I commanded.

"Have him meet me in the conservatory in ten minutes."

I replaced the receiver and looked up at Vanessa.

Her eyes were wide, a flicker of genuine anxiety dancing in their blue depths.

She had not anticipated Michael coming to the house so openly after yesterday's violent encounter on the stairs.

"Michael is here?" she asked, her voice slightly higher than usual.

"Yes," I replied, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket.

"He cut his trip to New York short to help finalize our wedding details."

I walked around the desk, stopping directly in front of her.

I reached out and gently tucked a stray curl of blonde hair behind her ear.

She shivered slightly beneath my touch.

"He is a truly devoted friend, isn't he, Vanessa?"

"Yes," she whispered, her lips barely parting.

"Devoted to the very end."

"Come," I said, offering her my arm with cold, aristocratic courtesy.

"Let us go welcome my best man to the estate."

We walked out of the study side by side, our shoes clicking rhythmically against the black-and-white marble floor.

Behind us, in the locked ground-floor suite, Hannah Miller sat before a secure terminal, monitoring the audio feeds that Daniel had just planted in the conservatory chandeliers.

The stage was fully dressed.

The players were in position.
