Chapter 2 - Frozen Frames at Midnight

The basement security suite hummed with the constant drone of cooling fans.
Nine high-definition monitors illuminated the windowless room in cold, blueish light.
Daniel Vance stood behind the main console, his muscular frame clad in tactical black.
He had served the Moretti family for twelve years, starting under Luca’s late father.
Luca stepped into the room, tossing his tailored jacket onto a leather swivel chair.
He loosened his silk tie and unbuttoned his top collar button.
"Pull it up," Luca commanded.
Daniel clicked the mechanical keyboard, bringing the camera labeled East Wing - Service Stair B to full screen.
The digital timestamp read 3:45:12 PM.
The wide angle covered the narrow, uncarpeted oak stairs that connected the pantry to the basement storage.
At 3:46 PM, the door at the top of the stairs swung open.
Hannah Miller appeared on the screen.
She was carrying a medium-sized cardboard container sealed with packing tape.
Luca leaned closer to the high-resolution monitor.
Hannah was moving quickly, taking each step with natural balance and speed.
"No limp," Luca noted coldly.
"None at all, boss," Daniel confirmed.
"Her balance was completely steady."
The time ticked forward to 3:49:08 PM.
The heavy fire door at the top of the stairwell opened again.
Vanessa Bellini stepped onto the landing.
She was not wearing her evening gown yet; she had on an expensive cream-colored cashmere sweater and slacks.
Her expression on the high-definition feed was furious, her lips moving rapidly.
A second figure followed her through the fire door.
It was a tall man with tailored trousers, an expensive gray wool overcoat, and silver cufflinks.
Luca felt the air leave his lungs in a single, icy breath.
He recognized the man’s posture before the face even turned toward the camera lens.
Michael Dawson.
The son of Luca’s father’s closest business associate.
The man Luca had shared a college dorm with at Georgetown.
The man who was supposed to stand beside him at the cathedral altar as his best man in three weeks.
Luca’s fingers gripped the edge of the laminate console so hard the plastic creaked.
"Michael was supposed to be in Manhattan finalizing the logistics contract," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
Daniel swallowed hard, keeping his hands on the console controls.
"His flight was logged out of O'Hare yesterday morning, boss."
"He never boarded it," Luca whispered.
On the screen, Michael caught Vanessa by the wrist.
He pulled her into the corner of the concrete landing, out of sight of the pantry window.
Michael reached inside his wool overcoat and pulled out a thick, legal-sized manila envelope.
Vanessa snatched the envelope from his hands.
She tore the seal open with her manicured fingernails and pulled out several sheets of glossy paper.
She smiled, tilting the papers toward the stairwell lighting.
Then, Michael grabbed her chin and kissed her.
It was not a brief, nervous embrace.
It was a hungry, possessive kiss that lasted several suffocating seconds.
Luca did not flinch, but his eyes turned into twin voids of absolute darkness.
"Keep the tape rolling," he instructed.
On the monitor, Vanessa pulled away from Michael, laughing.
She turned toward the stairs to descend, and that was when she froze.
Hannah Miller was standing halfway down the second flight, looking directly up at them.
Hannah’s face on the camera captured sheer, unadulterated panic.
The young maid turned instantly, attempting to hurry down toward the basement exit.
Vanessa lunged down the stairs with astonishing speed.
She caught Hannah by the strap of her maid apron, jerking her backward.
The cardboard box slipped from Hannah’s arms, tumbling down three steps.
Hannah raised both hands in a defensive gesture, shaking her head frantically.
Vanessa pointed a finger directly into the girl’s face, screaming words the camera had no microphone to capture.
Michael remained at the top of the stairs, watching with cold indifference.
Then, Vanessa stepped forward and shoved Hannah’s left shoulder with both hands.
Hannah lost her balance on the narrow oak tread.
Her left foot slipped forward into empty air.
Her knee slammed directly into the sharp corner of the lower stair riser with sickening force.
The girl collapsed onto the landing, clutching her leg as her face twisted in a silent scream of agony.
Luca stood up so abruptly that his chair slammed against the concrete wall behind him.
"Stop the feed," Luca ordered.
Daniel hit the spacebar instantly.
The image froze on Hannah lying curled on the wooden landing, her fingers dug into her bleeding knee.
Vanessa stood two steps above her, clutching the manila envelope against her cashmere sweater.
"Did Michael touch her?" Luca asked.
"No, sir," Daniel replied quietly.
"He simply checked his watch, turned around, and walked back through the pantry doors."
"Where is Michael Dawson right now?"
"He left through the south delivery gate at four-twelve in an unregistered black sedan."
"Track that vehicle," Luca said.
"I want every toll booth and intersection camera between here and Cook County scanned within the hour."
"Understood, boss."
Luca leaned down, his eyes scanning the frozen frame on the screen.
Something else caught his attention.
The cardboard box that Hannah had dropped had split open on the third stair.
Several white envelopes had spilled out across the polished wood.
"Zoom in on the debris on stair four," Luca commanded.
Daniel manipulated the digital controls.
The pixelated image sharpened, rendering the high-contrast details of the dropped mail.
These were not wedding decorations.
These were standard personal postal envelopes, each marked with stamps and canceled postmarks.
And across the center of the topmost envelope was a sweeping, familiar cursive script written in purple fountain ink.
Luca’s pulse hammered violently in his ears.
He recognized that handwriting anywhere.
It belonged to his twenty-four-year-old sister, Rebecca.
Rebecca, who had supposedly walked out of the family compound six months ago.
Rebecca, who had blocked Luca’s phone calls, refused his financial support, and cut all contact with the syndicate.
Rebecca, who had sent an intermediary to say she despised Luca’s upcoming marriage to Vanessa.
Luca leaned so close to the monitor his breath fogged the glass.
The envelope was addressed directly to Mr. Luca Moretti, Personal & Confidential.
The postmark on the purple-ink envelope was dated five months ago.
Beside it lay another letter from four months ago.
And another from three months ago.
All of them were unopened.
All of them had been hidden inside the cardboard box that Vanessa had ordered Hannah to carry to the basement incinerator.
Luca’s breathing turned ragged.
"She took Rebecca’s letters," Luca whispered, the realization striking him like a physical blow.
"She intercepted my sister's correspondence from the estate mailbox."
Daniel looked at the screen, his own face turning grim.
"Boss... Miss Rebecca didn't abandon you."
"No," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register that signaled someone was going to die.
"She was trying to reach me all along."
He straightened his back, smoothing down the cuffs of his white dress shirt.
"Where is Hannah Miller right now?"
"Dr. Mercer just finished wrapping her knee in the first-floor guest suite, sir."
"Is she alone?"
"Mrs. Carter is with her, brewing some chamomile tea."
"Have Mrs. Carter step out," Luca said, turning toward the basement doorway.
"Bring Hannah to my private office immediately."
"Can she walk, boss?"
Luca’s expression was terrifyingly cold.
May you like
"Carry her if you have to, Daniel."
"We are going to dismantle this house tonight."
