Chapter 12 - The Devil Comes Home

Beatrice stared at the phone.
Miami was hours away. Lily did not have hours.
She ran back downstairs anyway.
In the living room, Victoria was laughing into her cell phone, one leg crossed over the other, a fresh drink in her hand.
“Yes, Daddy, I know,” she said. “By the time Leo comes home, everything will be much simpler.”
Beatrice froze. Victoria saw her.
Her smile faded. “What did you do?”
The front doors exploded inward.
Mahogany cracked. Hinges screamed. Cold rain and night air rushed into the foyer.
Leo Rossi stood in the opening with Mateo and four men behind him.
Not in Miami. Twenty minutes away.
Later, Beatrice would learn that the Miami meeting had been a decoy. Leo had suspected a leak in his household, but he had not known where the poison was.
He had been testing the people closest to him, circling back toward Chicago when Beatrice called.

The devil had come home. And for once, he was on the right side of the door.
