Chapter 19 - The Lesson of the Underestimated

Across the room, a man from New York named Vincent Falcone approached with his thin-lipped wife. Falcone had mocked half of Chicago and survived only because he knew where to stop.

Apparently, he had forgotten.

“Leo,” Falcone said, smiling as his eyes traveled over Beatrice. “I heard you reorganized the household. Didn’t realize you were bringing staff to the head table now.”

The silence tightened. Leo’s hand moved slightly at Beatrice’s back.

But Beatrice stepped forward first.

She smiled. It was not Victoria’s smile. It held no poison. It held certainty.

“Mr. Falcone,” she said, her voice clear enough for the nearest fifty guests to hear. “How kind of you to notice. We did make changes. The previous arrangement lacked loyalty, judgment, and basic survival instincts.”

A few people inhaled sharply.

Beatrice continued.

“In my experience, a household falls when the people inside underestimate the ones they consider beneath them. I would be careful with that habit if I were you.”

Falcone’s smile vanished.

Leo looked at Beatrice with something close to wonder.

Falcone cleared his throat. “No offense meant.”

“Then none will be remembered,” Beatrice said.

It was elegant. It was merciful. It was also a warning.

Falcone bowed his head and stepped away. The room understood.

Beatrice was not Leo Rossi’s charity. She was not his weakness. She was not the maid he had dressed up for one night of scandal.

She was the woman who had called him home when everyone else stayed silent. The woman his daughter trusted more than sunlight.

The woman who had broken through a locked door with her own body and taught the most dangerous man in Chicago that power without love was just another empty room.
