Chapter 7 - The Intercepted Warning

Three days before the nightmare, Leo stopped Beatrice in the foyer.
He was leaving for a meeting in Miami. At least, that was what the household had been told.
His black SUV waited outside beneath the gray Chicago sky, and Mateo stood near the door speaking quietly into his phone.
Leo adjusted his cufflinks, then looked down at Beatrice. She immediately straightened.
“Yes, Mr. Rossi?”
“Keep an eye on Lily while I’m gone.”
Beatrice swallowed. “Always.”
His gaze lingered on her face, sharper than usual. “I mean it.”
“So do I.”
For a moment, something like gratitude passed through his eyes.
Then Victoria swept down the staircase in a cream suit and diamonds, kissed his cheek, and said, “Don’t worry, darling. I’ll take wonderful care of everything.”
