Chapter 21 - A Safe Place

A year later, the Rossi estate looked different to anyone who remembered what it had been.
The iron cellar door was gone entirely.
The room below had been transformed into a playroom and art studio, with bright rugs, shelves of paper, and a sign Lily painted herself that read: No monsters allowed.
The staff no longer lowered their eyes when Beatrice passed. They smiled. They asked questions. They brought problems to her because she solved them without cruelty.
Leo still carried darkness. A man does not walk out of his past untouched.
But he came home earlier. He held fewer meetings in locked rooms.
He built legitimate companies piece by piece and let old enemies call it weakness until they discovered how dangerous a man could be when he was no longer desperate to prove he had no heart.
On the first anniversary of the night Beatrice made the forbidden call, Lily asked for a family dinner in the kitchen.
Not the formal dining room. The kitchen.
Mrs. Bellini made lasagna. Mateo brought cannoli. Leo burned the garlic bread and denied it with great dignity.
After dinner, Lily stood on a chair and tapped her spoon against a glass.
“I have a speech,” she announced.
Leo sat back. “Naturally.”
Beatrice wiped sauce from Lily’s chin. “Go ahead, sweet girl.”
Lily unfolded a piece of paper covered in crayon hearts.
“One year ago,” she read carefully, “Bee saved me from the dark. Daddy came home. Everybody was scared. But now the cellar is an art room, and Daddy smiles more, and Bee says I can have a puppy if I keep my room clean for thirty days.”
Leo looked at Beatrice. “That clause was not approved.”
“It was pending,” Beatrice said.
Lily continued. “So I think we should say thank you to Bee because she is not just my guardian. She is my safe place.”

Beatrice’s eyes filled before she could stop them.
Lily climbed down from the chair and hugged her around the waist.
