Chapter 2 - The Trap Beneath the Silk

The metallic click of Luca’s semi-automatic pistol echoed through the bedroom like a gunshot.
Dr. Voss immediately backed away toward the fireplace, his eyes wild with sudden self-righteous triumph.
"Arrest her!" Voss shouted, his finger stabbing toward Norah.
"She’s been poisoning him under our noses the entire time! That explains the cardiac irregularities! She staged this whole grapefruit interaction stunt just to make herself look innocent before he died!"
Norah stared down the black barrel of Luca’s gun.
Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but the panic that threatened to drown her was held back by a surge of pure, cold adrenaline.
She knew how people in power operated.
When a crime occurred in a house like this, the maid was always the first suspect, the easiest scapegoat, and the last person anyone believed.
"Luca, don't move," Norah said, keeping her hands open and visible at chest height.
"If you shoot me right now, the person who actually paid for that poison walks out of this house with twenty million dollars and Gideon Wolf’s empire."
"You have five seconds to explain why your name is on a receipt for pharmaceutical murder," Luca growled, his knuckles white around the grip.
"Look at the logic!" Norah said, turning her head slightly toward the bed, addressing Gideon directly.
"Mr. Wolf, you built an empire by reading human motives. Look at me and ask yourself one simple question."
Gideon stared at her from the bed, his dark eyes burning through the haze of medication and exhaustion.
"Ask it," Gideon whispered.
"If I spent the last sixteen days poisoning your breakfast in secret, why would I stop you from drinking the grapefruit juice today?" Norah asked, her voice ringing with desperate clarity.
"The juice was about to deliver the lethal blow! The interaction would have triggered massive cardiac arrest within forty-eight hours, and Dr. Voss and eleven other specialists would have written 'natural organ failure' on your death certificate!"
"Nobody suspected poison until two minutes ago! Why would an assassin expose her own murder weapon in front of twelve witnesses?"
The room fell into an eerie, heavy silence.
Dr. Patel looked between Norah and the receipt, his brow furrowed in deep contemplation.
"She has a point, Malcolm. A killer about to succeed doesn't throw a wrench into their own machinery."
"It’s psychological manipulation!" Mrs. Calder interjected shrilly, clutching her hands to her apron.
"She knew the doctors were discussing hospital transfer this morning! She realized that once Mr. Wolf was in an ICU, extensive toxicology panels would run automatically! She panicked and staged a heroic discovery to deflect blame!"
Norah turned her head sharply toward the housekeeper.
"How did you know the doctors were discussing a hospital transfer this morning, Mrs. Calder?"
Mrs. Calder’s jaw snapped shut.
Her eyes darted nervously to the floor.
"I... I heard rumors in the hall," Mrs. Calder murmured.
"The doctors held that conference in the south solarium behind soundproof glass twenty minutes ago," Norah said coldly, stepping forward despite Luca’s weapon.
"I only heard them because I was polishing the brass doorframe outside the room. You were supposed to be down in the basement laundry inventorying linens since seven o'clock."
Gideon’s gaze shifted like a guillotine blade from Norah to Mrs. Calder.
"Lower the gun, Luca," Gideon commanded.
"Boss, she had the poison in her locker—"
"I said lower the gun," Gideon repeated, and this time the command was accompanied by a harsh, suffocating cough that racked his entire torso.
Luca slowly decocked the weapon and dropped it to his side, though his eyes never left Norah’s throat.
Gideon gestured with one trembling, pale finger toward the clear evidence bag containing the receipt.
"Bring it here."
Luca stepped to the bedside and laid the plastic bag on Gideon’s lap.
Gideon leaned forward, squinting at the carbon copy slip.
"Norah Blake," Gideon read aloud.
"Purchase date: yesterday, 3:15 PM. Downtown Compounding Pharmacy, West 4th Street."
He looked up at Norah.
"Where were you yesterday at three in the afternoon, Miss Blake?"
"I was on a twelve-foot ladder in your grand ballroom, Mr. Wolf," Norah answered without a split-second of hesitation.
"I was hand-cleaning every individual crystal prism on the Austrian chandelier under the direct supervision of Mr. Henderson, your head steward."
"I started at one in the afternoon and didn't step off that ladder until five-thirty. Mr. Henderson brought me water twice, and the ballroom security camera sits directly above the north terrace doors."
Gideon’s jaw tightened.
He looked at Luca.
"Call Henderson. Pull the ballroom footage. Right now."
Mrs. Calder’s hands began to twitch against her skirt.
"Mr. Wolf, you are exerting yourself unnecessarily. Your heart—"
"My heart is currently beating because this woman stopped me from swallowing that glass," Gideon hissed, his voice cutting like a razor.
"Luca, clear this room. Every doctor except Patel leaves this estate. Voss, your contract is terminated. My legal team will review your clinical negligence regarding basic contraindication warnings."
Dr. Voss’s face turned an ugly shade of mottled purple.
"You cannot dismiss me! You are a dying man experiencing paranoid delusions! Without my care—"
"Marcus," Gideon said coldly to the second guard.
"If Dr. Voss is not past my front gates in four minutes, throw him over them."
Marcus stepped forward, his massive frame towering over the physician.
Voss looked at Gideon’s dead, merciless eyes, realized the billionaire meant every syllable, and turned on his heel, storming out of the suite with the remaining specialists scuttling behind him like frightened beetles.
Only Dr. Patel remained, looking humbled and pale.
"Patel," Gideon ordered, breathing heavily.
"Flush my IV lines. Start me on activated charcoal if necessary, and draw fresh blood for a complete external toxicology screen. Send the vials to an independent forensics lab under Luca’s personal chain of custody."
"Immediately, Mr. Wolf," Patel said, quickly rolling the emergency cart toward the bedside.
Gideon turned his gaze back to Norah, who stood tall despite the trembling in her knees.
"As for you, Miss Blake," Gideon said, his dark eyes searching hers with intense scrutiny.
"You are not going back to your quarters. And you are certainly not leaving this estate."
"Am I under arrest, sir?" Norah asked quietly.
"No," Gideon said, leaning back into his pillows as sweat beaded on his forehead.

"You are my new personal caretaker. You will prepare every sip of water, every meal, and every medicine bottle that enters this room."
"Because someone in this house paid four thousand dollars to turn my organs to ash, and you are the only person who didn't let them finish the job."
