Chapter 9 - The Ashes of Wolf Manor

Sirens wailed in the distance, echoing through the pine-covered hills surrounding the Wolf estate.

Thick plumes of dark, acrid smoke poured from the basement vents of the south wing into the evening sky.

Estate fire suppression sprinklers roared to life throughout the corridors, drenching the priceless Persian carpets and mahogany paneling in freezing water.

Gideon and Norah moved steadily through the north service gallery, guided by the green glow of emergency lanterns.

Marcus supported Dr. Patel, who was clutching the critical digital storage drives containing the acoustic recordings and the medical records.

Luca walked behind them, pushing a handcuffed Elena Wolf forward at gunpoint.

When they finally pushed through the heavy iron exit doors into the cold night air of the north courtyard, the scene was illuminated by flashing red and blue lights.

Six Federal Bureau of Investigation tactical vehicles and three local fire trucks were already roaring up the winding driveway, tires screeching against the wet gravel.

Federal agents in tactical vests poured out of the vehicles, weapons drawn, shouting commands into the night.

Special Agent David Vance, lead investigator for the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Division, strode toward the group, his gold badge glinting beneath the floodlights.

"Gideon Wolf?" Vance demanded, surveying the smoke, the blood on Gideon’s arm, and the armed security detail.

"I am Gideon Wolf," Gideon said, stepping forward into the glare of the headlights.

"This woman is Elena Wolf, formerly presumed deceased in the Lake Tahoe vehicle incident twelve years ago."

"She is the primary architect of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent death certification, and the attempted homicide of three individuals on this property."

Vance stared in disbelief at the blonde woman in handcuffs, then checked the biometric facial recognition scanner in his hand.

The device beeped twice with a green verification light: MATCH CONFIRMED: ELENA MARGARET WOLF.

"Good God," Vance breathed, signaling two federal agents to take custody of Elena.

Elena did not look at the agents.

She turned her head, spitting blood onto the gravel, and fixed her burning gaze on Norah Blake.

"You ruined twelve years of planning, you pathetic little maid," Elena hissed with venomous hatred.

"You were supposed to be cleaning toilets for minimum wage!"

Norah stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Gideon in the cold wind.

"My mother taught me that a person’s dignity isn't defined by the uniform they wear, Miss Wolf," Norah answered calmly, her voice carrying across the silent courtyard.

"It’s defined by what they refuse to do when they are given the choice."

"You had millions, an empire, and an entire family’s name, and you chose to be a murderer."

"Take her away," Agent Vance commanded.

Federal agents pushed Elena into the back of an armored SUV, slamming the heavy doors shut.

Emergency paramedics rushed forward with stretchers, blankets, and trauma kits.

A paramedic tried to guide Gideon onto a gurney, but Gideon held up a firm hand, refusing to lie down.

He allowed them to clean and bandage the cut on his arm, but his dark eyes remained fixed on Norah, who stood shivering slightly in the chilly autumn air.

Gideon took off his heavy wool coat—unburned and dry—and draped it gently over Norah’s shoulders.

The warmth of the coat enveloped her, carrying the faint, reassuring scent of cedarwood and amber.

"You're shivering," Gideon said softly.

Norah looked up into his dark eyes, feeling an unexplainable, quiet pull between them that went far beyond employer and employee.

"Adrenaline is wearing off, I suppose," she whispered.

Dr. Patel approached them, holding a clean digital tablet.

"Gideon, your preliminary vitals are stabilizing," Patel said, relief evident in his voice.

"The digitalis levels in your blood have dropped below the toxic threshold thanks to the rapid binders."

"Your kidneys are clearing the remaining compounds."

"With two weeks of rest and proper nutrition, you will make a full recovery."

Gideon nodded, but his eyes never left Norah’s face.

"The south wing is damaged, but the main house and the east guest suites are completely intact," Luca reported, jogging up from the courtyard gate.

"Fire crews have contained the basement blaze. The structure is completely safe."

"What about Mrs. Calder?" Norah asked, turning to Luca.

Luca’s expression softened slightly.

"She’s in the custody of private security in the carriage house."

"She didn't run. She confessed everything to Agent Vance’s team twenty minutes ago."

"She provided the Swiss bank account routing numbers and the location of the encrypted drop phone Elena used to contact her."

Norah turned to Gideon, her eyes pleading.

"Mr. Wolf... her granddaughter—"

"The Swiss clinic received a direct wire transfer of three hundred thousand dollars forty minutes ago, Norah," Gideon interrupted gently.

Norah blinked in astonishment.

"You... you paid for the treatment?"

"Mrs. Calder committed a grave crime, and she will face the legal consequences of her actions in court," Gideon said, his voice firm yet deeply compassionate.

"A seven-year-old child fighting for her life in Zurich should not die for the sins of her grandmother."

Tears pricked the corners of Norah’s eyes.

She looked at the man before her—a man the world called ruthless, cold, and untouchable—and saw the immense humanity he had hidden beneath his corporate armor for so many years.

"Thank you," Norah whispered.

Gideon offered her his arm, his tall silhouette outlined against the flashing lights and the towering facade of Wolf Manor.

"Let’s go inside, Miss Blake," Gideon said quietly.

"We have an entire empire to rebuild tomorrow."

"And I need someone by my side who knows how to spot the poison before it reaches the glass."
