Chapter 7 - The Signature in Blood

The south conservatory was bathed in the pale, cold glare of the late afternoon sky.

Exotic orchids and towering palms cast long, spider-like shadows across the Italian marble floor.

Sitting at the circular glass table was a woman whose presence commanded the entire room without raising her voice.

She wore a tailored charcoal wool suit, an ivory silk blouse, and her platinum-blonde hair was cut into a sharp, geometric bob.

On her left pinky finger sat the heavy gold signet ring bearing the snarling wolf’s head.

Elena Wolf looked forty-two, though her posture and flawless skin made her appear younger.

Her cold gray eyes swept across the glass room, evaluating every piece of furniture, every painting, every antique with the cold calculation of an appraiser.

Beside her stood two men in discreet tactical suits, their hands folded neatly in front of their waists.

The heavy brass-lined double doors opened.

Norah walked in first, carrying a polished silver tea tray bearing a porcelain pot of Earl Grey, two delicate bone-china cups, and a crystal dish of sliced lemons.

Her gaze was lowered to the floor in perfect deference, her posture mimicking that of a nervous domestic servant.

Behind her walked Gideon.

He leaned heavily on an antique silver-topped cane, his movements deliberate, stiff, and visibly frail.

He wore a dark velvet smoking jacket over his linen shirt, his face powdered slightly pale to exaggerate the lingering effects of the poison.

Elena’s lips curled into a cold, triumphant smile as she watched her younger brother struggle toward the table.

"Twelve years, Gideon," Elena said, her voice smooth, low, and laced with venomous amusement.

"And you look like you're about to join Father in the mausoleum."

Gideon slowly lowered himself into the leather armchair opposite her, resting his hands heavily on the cane.

"You were supposed to be ashes in Lake Tahoe, Elena," Gideon said, his voice raspy and breathless.

"The fire burned for three hours. The police found your signet ring among the melted steel."

Elena let out a soft, musical laugh that held not an ounce of human warmth.

"A burned homeless woman wore that ring into the ravine, Gideon," Elena replied casually, waving her manicured hand.

"Old Arthur Voss took care of the dental records for five million dollars deposited into a numbered account in Zurich."

"Father always intended the empire to belong to me."

"I was the firstborn. I was the one who negotiated the Asian shipping routes while you were still running college fraternity parties."

"Father gave you the chairman’s seat because of an archaic bloodline trust written in the nineteenth century that excluded female heirs."

Norah silently stepped to the table, setting down the porcelain cup and saucer before Elena.

She poured the hot tea, her hands steady, the steam rising between them.

Elena did not even glance at Norah’s face.

To Elena, the woman pouring the tea was merely furniture with a heartbeat.

"Julian was weak," Gideon murmured, watching Elena lift the teacup.

"You used him."

"Julian was an idiot with an expensive cocaine habit and twenty million dollars in gambling debt to Russian syndicates in Macau," Elena said dismissively.

"He was desperate for money, and desperate people are exceptionally easy to steer."

"He thought he was going to run the logistics ports."

"In reality, the moment your death certificate was signed, Julian’s conservatorship would have transferred all executive voting proxies directly to Aegis Holding Trust."

"To me."

Norah placed the crystal lemon dish beside Elena’s saucer, her sleeve brushing against the folder Elena had laid on the glass.

Inside the transparent sleeve of the folder was a document titled: Corporate Resolution 88-B: Emergency Succession of Wolf Holdings.

"Where is Julian now?" Elena asked, taking a delicate sip of the tea.

"He should have been here with Sterling to present the medical board’s final declaration."

Gideon leaned forward, the frailty in his expression slowly beginning to harden.

"Julian is in the cellar, Elena."

Elena paused with the teacup halfway to her lips.

"What did you say?"

"He took the cyanide you gave him as a contingency plan," Gideon said, his voice dropping an octave, losing every trace of weakness.

"He swallowed the glass bead when he realized his forged memos and sapphire ink had been exposed."

Elena set the teacup down on the saucer with a sharp, brittle clatter.

Her eyes narrowed, the mocking warmth draining instantly from her features.

"You're bluffing. Julian wouldn't dare."

"Julian didn't have a choice," Norah spoke up, her voice cutting through the silence of the conservatory like a silver blade.

Elena’s head snapped toward Norah, her eyes blazing with sudden shock and fury.

"Who gave you permission to speak, girl?" Elena snarled.

"You should recognize my name, Miss Wolf," Norah said, looking directly into the blonde woman’s eyes.

"You paid four thousand dollars in cash under my name at the West 4th Street compounding pharmacy to buy the digitalis."

"You thought framing a twenty-eight-year-old maid with no money and no connections would make the investigation disappear neatly."

Elena’s two bodyguards instantly reached inside their jackets.

Before their hands could clear the lapels, the glass doors behind them burst open.

Luca and Marcus stepped in with sound-suppressed tactical carbines raised, laser sights painting two red dots directly between the bodyguards’ eyes.

"Hands on the table. Palms flat," Luca commanded in a voice of lethal certainty.

The two men froze, their eyes darting to Elena.

"Elena Wolf," Gideon said, rising to his feet without the cane, his posture completely erect, towering over the table.

"The acoustic recording system in this room has captured every single word regarding the Lake Tahoe homicide, Arthur Voss’s bribery, and Julian’s poisoning."

"And the file was just transmitted simultaneously to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Interpol, and the United States Attorney’s Office."
