Chapter 1 - The Medal of Banned Truths and the Auditorium Ambush

The flashbulbs blinded the auditorium, but Staff Sergeant Vance didn't flinch.
As the heavy brass medal was pinned to her immaculate dress uniform, she was the picture of a decorated war hero receiving the nation's highest praise.
The applause rolling through the grand hall was deafening—until the heavy oak doors banged open with a deafening crash.
A high-ranking civilian official, his face contorted in a mask of pure rage, stormed down the center aisle.
Before the senior general could react, the intruder lunged forward, ripping the medal straight from Vance’s chest and sending it clattering onto the marble floor.
"Never a hero, only bait!" the man snarled, grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her violently as the crowd gasped in unison.
Vance’s eyes flashed with venomous defiance.
Instead of cowering, she thrust her chin forward and hissed right back, "You sent my unit into that ambush!"
"Shut up before she knows!" he yelled back, panicking, but the damage was already done.
From the stage, General McCallum stepped forward, his expression cold and unreadable.
With a sharp flick of his wrist, he slammed a pair of confidential military files onto the podium.
He looked straight at the enraged official and delivered the crushing blow: "The routing came from your house. Jason copied it, not me."
In the front row, an older female officer covered her mouth in absolute horror as the dark truth unraveled in front of the entire military command.
Down on her knees, Sergeant Vance calmly picked up her discarded medal from the floor, her gaze locking onto her betrayer with a silent promise of vengeance.
The ceremony was over.
The war had just begun.
The grand auditorium of the Pentagon annex fell into an unnatural, suffocating silence, broken only by the hum of the overhead ventilation and the distant rumble of Washington traffic outside.
Under Secretary of Defense Arthur Sterling stood frozen over Staff Sergeant Maya Vance, his chest heaving, his manicured fingers trembling as the realization of his public slip-up crashed down upon him.
Arthur had spent thirty years cultivating a pristine reputation as a dedicated public servant, a patriot, and a family man, yet in less than ten seconds, his mask had been violently stripped away by his own uncontrolled rage.
Maya stood up slowly from the marble floor, her posture rigid, her hands securely clutching the heavy brass medal she had just retrieved.
She didn't wipe the dust from the metal; she simply held it like a weapon.
"Under Secretary Sterling," General McCallum's deep, authoritative voice boomed across the silent hall, cutting through the tension like a razor.
"You are currently trespassing in a restricted military commendation ceremony, and your presence here violates three separate federal protocols."
Arthur slowly turned his head to look at the general, his face losing all remaining color, sweat beading along his high forehead.
"General... you don't understand," Arthur stammered, his voice dropping from a furious snarl to a pathetic, desperate plea.
"This... this woman is lying. She's fabricating a conspiracy to deflect from her own operational failures overseas."
Before McCallum could reply, a sharp, choked sob echoed from the front row of the auditorium.
Colonel Evelyn Sterling—Arthur’s wife of twenty-five years and a revered logistics officer in the Department of the Army—slowly lowered her hands from her face.
Her eyes, wide with absolute horror and betrayal, locked onto her husband.
"The routing came from our house, Arthur?" Evelyn’s voice shook violently, trembling with a grief so profound it silenced the entire command staff.
"Did you say... Jason copied it?"
Jason Sterling, their twenty-three-year-old son and an intelligence analyst assigned to the Pentagon's digital command center, shrank back into his seat beside his mother, his face turning ghostly white as every head in the auditorium turned to stare at him.
Arthur spun around, frantically waving his hands toward his family.
"Evelyn, honey, don't listen to them! It's a military setup! They're trying to destroy my political career!" Arthur pleaded, taking a step toward the front row.
Maya Vance stepped smoothly into his path, blocking him with an immovable, lethal grace.
"Your career was over the moment you traded American lives for corporate defense contracts, Sterling," Maya whispered, her dark eyes narrowing with venom.
"And now, everyone is going to find out what your golden boy son did with those encrypted coordinates."
General McCallum nodded curtly to the two military police officers stationed at the side of the stage.
"Escort Under Secretary Sterling off the premises," McCallum ordered coldly.
"And detain Jason Sterling for a full digital forensic audit of his terminal."

As the military police swarmed down the aisle, grabbing Arthur by the arms as he thrashed and screamed denials, Maya stood tall beneath the glaring lights of the auditorium.
The medal in her hand felt heavy—not as a symbol of honor, but as the first true weapon in a war that would tear the Sterling dynasty apart from the root.
