Chapter 9 - The Confession of Julian Vance

The amber liquid in Julian Vance’s crystal glass swirled as he leaned casually against the metal railing of the elevated office, looking down at Maya and Evelyn with an expression of cool, undisturbed amusement.
Maya didn't lower her weapon, keeping her sidearm trained squarely on his chest.
"Cut the pleasantries, Julian," Maya demanded, her voice cutting through the cavernous space.
"Your signature is on Arthur Sterling's promissory note for two million dollars. You financed the very cartel that supplied the weapons for the ambush that killed my squad."
Julian let out a low, smooth chuckle, taking another slow sip of his whiskey before setting the glass down on a nearby metal barrel.
"My signature is on a lot of documents, Sergeant Vance," Julian replied, descending the metal staircase slowly, step by step, until he stood just ten feet away from them.
"In the shipping business, you lend money to desperate men with political power. Arthur Sterling needed cash to cover his gambling debts in my brother Viktor's underground clubs. I simply acted as the banker."
"You acted as an accomplice to treason," Evelyn stepped forward, her voice trembling with cold fury as she stared down the man her husband had trusted.
"You knew Viktor was using those shipping routes to funnel illegal weapons, and you let my son take the fall for it!"
Julian stopped walking, his blue eyes hardening slightly as he looked at Evelyn.
"Colonel Sterling... please," Julian said, his tone dripping with condescension.
"Your son Jason is a spoiled, weak-willed brat who thought he was playing a high-tech video game when he copied those routing codes. Nobody forced him to sell out his country; he did it because he wanted a new sports car and his father's approval."
Before Julian could say another word, Maya closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, holstering her gun and grabbing Julian by the lapels of his cashmere coat, slamming him back against the nearest shipping crate with a resounding thud.
"Where is Viktor?" Maya hissed directly into his face, her dark eyes burning with lethal intent.
"Where is the main server farm?"
Julian didn't struggle against her grip; instead, a slow, dark smile crept across his lips.
"You're looking for Viktor in all the wrong places, Sergeant," Julian whispered, unfazed by the violence.
"Viktor isn't hiding in the harbor. He's currently sitting in the Secretary of Defense’s private conference room at the Pentagon, negotiating the complete immunity of Vance Logistics."
Maya froze.
The words hit her like a physical blow.
"The Secretary of Defense..." Evelyn gasped, horror dawning in her eyes.
"It goes all the way to the cabinet."
"Of course it does, Colonel," Julian smiled, gently pushing Maya’s hands off his lapel and straightening his coat.
"You didn't really think a mid-level civilian official like Arthur Sterling could orchestrate an international arms conspiracy all by himself, did you?"
Julian walked past them toward the warehouse exit, pausing by the open door to look back over his shoulder.
May you like
"If you want to stop Viktor, you don't need a gun," Julian said smoothly.
"You need a broadcast. And right now, the national press corps is waiting outside the Pentagon for the Secretary's morning press conference."
