Chapter 2 - The Secrets of the Sterling Household and the Digital Ghost

The rain beat a relentless, rhythmic tattoo against the reinforced glass windows of the Sterling family's Georgetown townhouse, mirroring the dark, suffocating mood inside the sprawling living room.
Colonel Evelyn Sterling sat rigidly on the edge of the cream-colored sofa, her hands tightly clasped in her lap, staring blankly at the unlit fireplace.
Her uniform jacket was draped over the armchair, her service ribbons catching the dim light of a single floor lamp.
In less than twelve hours, her entire life had been detonated.
Her husband was currently sitting in a military holding cell facing charges of treason and conspiracy, and her only son, Jason, was locked in an interrogation room downstairs at the Pentagon, undergoing a merciless download of his digital life.
The front door unlatched with a sharp click, and the heavy oak panel swung inward.
Maya Vance stepped into the foyer, shaking the rain from her dark trench coat before removing it to reveal her service uniform beneath.
She walked into the living room without an invitation, her combat boots clicking softly against the polished hardwood floor.
Evelyn didn't look up immediately, but her shoulders tightened.
"You have some nerve walking into my home, Sergeant Vance," Evelyn said, her voice strained, carrying a fragile, hollow exhaustion.
"Your home?" Maya replied, her tone devoid of warmth, though not entirely without pity.
"This home was bought with blood money, Colonel. Every square foot of this townhouse was subsidized by defense contracts tied to the blood of Echo Squad."
Evelyn finally raised her gaze, her eyes bloodshot and rimmed with red from hours of silent weeping.
"Why did you keep quiet for six months, Maya?" Evelyn asked, the question breaking through her defenses.
"If Arthur compromised your unit's position in the Hindu Kush mountains, why didn't you report it up the chain of command immediately?"
Maya walked over to the mantlepiece, picking up a framed photograph of a young Jason Sterling in his Boy Scout uniform, standing proudly beside his father.
"Because the chain of command was completely corrupted from the very top, Colonel," Maya said, setting the photograph back down face-down.
"Every time I tried to file an incident report regarding the compromised radio frequencies, my reports vanished from the secure server. General McCallum was the only one who believed me, but even he needed undeniable proof before we could move against Under Secretary Sterling."
Evelyn covered her mouth with her hand, a fresh wave of tears spilling over her eyelashes.
"Jason... my son," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking.
"He's just a kid, Maya. He’s brilliant with computers, but he’s weak. Arthur manipulated him. He told Jason that leaking those coordinates to the private defense contractor was just a routine security simulation for a corporate client."
"A simulation where nine American soldiers were slaughtered in an ambush," Maya countered harshly, stepping closer to the sofa until she was standing right above Evelyn.
"Jason didn't just copy routing codes for a game, Colonel. He sold our real-time GPS locations to the highest bidder through an encrypted server routed directly through this house's basement router."
Before Evelyn could respond, the secure landline telephone on the side table shrilly pierced the silence of the room.
Evelyn flinched, staring at the phone as if it were a venomous snake.
Maya reached out, picked up the heavy receiver, and pressed it to her ear without hesitation.
"Staff Sergeant Vance," Maya answered crisply.
A sharp, breathless voice crackled through the secure line—it was Lieutenant Miller, the lead forensic investigator assigned to Jason’s interrogation.
"Sergeant, you need to get down to the Pentagon data lab right now," Miller reported urgently.
"We decrypted Jason's external hard drive. The routing codes he sent weren't just sold to a private defense contractor."
"Who were they sent to, Miller?" Maya demanded, her eyes narrowing.
May you like
"They were routed directly to an offshore shell corporation," Miller said, his voice dropping to a grim whisper.
"An offshore account fully registered under the maiden name of Evelyn Sterling."
