Chapter 6 - The Arlington Safehouse and the Ghost of Viktor Vance

The heavy armored transport slid silently into the subterranean garage of the Arlington safehouse, its tires crunching faintly over the damp concrete.

The subterranean bunker was designed during the Cold War to withstand a localized electromagnetic pulse, featuring thick lead-lined walls, an independent air-filtration system, and zero digital footprint.

Maya Vance stepped out of the vehicle first, her hand resting firmly on the grip of her sidearm as she scanned the dim, fluorescent-lit space for any sign of a security breach.

"Clear," she muttered, walking back to open the rear door for Colonel Evelyn Sterling.

Evelyn stepped out slowly, her posture slumped, her eyes hollowed out by grief and the relentless shock of the past twenty-four hours.

The destruction of the Pentagon data lab hadn't just vaporized digital files; it had vaporized any remaining illusion Evelyn harbored about the man she had loved and married for a quarter of a century.

As they stepped into the main command room of the safehouse—a sterile space dominated by tactical maps, encrypted radio arrays, and a bank of offline monitors—Maya guided Evelyn toward a worn leather armchair.

"Sit down, Colonel," Maya instructed gently, pushing a paper cup of water into Evelyn’s trembling hands.

"Drink it."

Evelyn obeyed mechanically, taking a small, shaky sip before looking up at Maya, who was already at the central desk, unzipping her tactical vest to retrieve the offline micro-drive.

"Viktor Vance knew we were closing in," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking.

"Blowing up a wing of the Pentagon... that's an act of war against the United States government. He's completely insane."

"He's not insane, Evelyn; he's desperate," Maya corrected, plugging the physical micro-drive into an independent, air-gapped laptop that had never touched the internet.

The screen flickered to life, illuminating Maya’s sharp, determined face in a pale green glow.

"When Under Secretary Sterling sold out Echo Squad, he wasn't just working for a rogue defense contractor," Maya continued, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard.

"He was paying off a massive gambling debt he accumulated in offshore private clubs owned by Viktor's syndicate."

Evelyn flinched as if she had been physically struck, closing her eyes tightly.

"Arthur... gambling?" she breathed.

"I thought his late nights at the office were for budget reviews."

"They were for high-stakes baccarat and collateral negotiations," Maya said coldly, pulling up a scanned document that appeared on the screen.

"Look at this."

Evelyn opened her eyes and leaned forward, staring at the monitor.

It was a promissory note, signed by Arthur Sterling four years ago, pledging Vance Logistics as the guarantor for a two-million-dollar line of credit.

And right below Arthur’s signature was a secondary counter-signature that made the blood run cold in Evelyn’s veins.

It was signed by Julian Vance—Viktor’s younger, estranged brother, who currently operated a sprawling maritime shipping empire right out of the Port of Baltimore.

"Julian..." Evelyn breathed, absolute confusion washing over her face.

"Julian Vance is a legitimate businessman. He spent twenty years distancing himself from Viktor's criminal syndicate."

"Or so he wanted the intelligence community to believe," a deep, gravelly voice echoed suddenly from the shadows of the safehouse doorway.

Maya and Evelyn both whipped around, drawing their weapons in unison.

Standing in the doorway, casually leaning against the concrete frame with his hands in his pockets, was General McCallum.

He wasn't wearing his service cap, and his uniform jacket was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a man who looked decades older and infinitely more tired than the general who had commanded the podium at the Pentagon earlier that morning.

"General," Maya lowered her sidearm slightly, though her finger remained firmly inside the trigger guard.

"How did you find this location? This bunker was scrubbed from the active registry."

"I'm the one who authorized its construction during the Balkans crisis, Sergeant," McCallum replied dryly, walking slowly into the room and tossing a set of encrypted keys onto the desk.

"And I didn't come here to arrest you. I came here because the Secretary of Defense has just placed the entire Washington military district on lockdown."

Evelyn stood up from her chair, her voice trembling with rising panic.

"Lockdown? General, Arthur is in a holding cell, and my son is in custody. What else does the Department want?"

McCallum stopped walking, his heavy gaze resting squarely on Evelyn.

"They want a scapegoat, Colonel," McCallum said bluntly.

"The White House is panicking. A wing of the Pentagon just blew up, a high-ranking civilian official has been arrested for treason, and the media is already calling it a massive intelligence failure."

"They're preparing to classify the entire Echo Squad ambush as a training accident and sweep the whole thing under the rug," McCallum continued, his voice dropping into a harsh, angry rumble.

"And they've issued a kill-or-capture order for Staff Sergeant Maya Vance."
