Chapter 3 - The Invisible Eyes

The installation took three days. Elena waited until Mrs. Howard went to her luxury spa resort and Vanessa accompanied Julian to a conference in Dubai. The Howard Mansion was completely empty, save for a few trusted staff members whom Elena sent on paid leave. Detective Ruiz's team moved like ghosts. They were experts in high-tech surveillance. They didn't just place cameras; they embedded them. Inside the ornate crystal chandelier in the dining room. Behind the canvas of the expensive oil paintings in the hallways. Inside the smoke detectors of the living room and the kitchen. Even inside the decorative marble statues near the grand staircase. Every camera was equipped with ultra-sensitive microphones and night vision. The feeds were heavily encrypted and sent directly to a secure server in Ruiz's office. No one in the house would ever know they were being watched. When Julian, Vanessa, and Mrs. Howard returned, Elena greeted them at the door. She wore a soft, pink maternity dress. She looked weak, fragile, and perfectly pathetic. "Welcome home," she said, offering a timid smile. Mrs. Howard rolled her eyes and walked past her without a word. Vanessa hugged Julian entirely too long before turning to Elena. "You look awful, sweetie. Are you feeling okay?" Vanessa asked, her voice dripping with fake pity. "Just tired," Elena whispered, playing the victim flawlessly. For the next two weeks, Elena lived a double life. By day, she was the terrified, isolated pregnant wife. She allowed Vanessa to interrupt her conversations with Julian. She allowed Mrs. Howard to insult her cooking, her clothes, her background. She pretended to drink the tea Vanessa made her, pouring it into the potted plants when no one was looking. By night, she sat in her walk-in closet with the lights off, watching the live feeds on her secret phone. What she saw made her stomach turn. She watched Vanessa and Mrs. Howard sitting in the living room, sipping scotch. "The powder isn't working fast enough," Mrs. Howard complained on the audio feed. "She's too healthy. The doctor said the baby's heartbeat is strong." Vanessa laughed, a cruel, sharp sound. "Don't worry, Martha. I'll increase the dosage. And if that doesn't work..." Vanessa paused, swirling the amber liquid in her glass. "...accidents happen all the time to clumsy pregnant women. Especially on those beautiful stairs of yours." Elena pressed her hand over her mouth to muffle a gasp. She felt her baby kick against her palm. I've got you, she promised silently to her unborn child. I've got you. But the worst revelation came three nights later. Elena watched the feed from Julian's home office. Vanessa walked in wearing nothing but a silk robe. Julian didn't push her away. He let her sit on his lap. "When is she leaving, Julian? I'm tired of waiting," Vanessa whined, kissing his neck. "Soon," Julian muttered, looking completely detached. "Once the baby is born, my mother will arrange full custody. We'll pay her off. She'll disappear." Elena’s heart shattered into a million pieces. Her husband wasn't a victim of manipulation. He was an active participant in her destruction. The tears fell, but they didn't last long. Sadness quickly mutated into absolute, freezing rage. They wanted her to disappear? She would make sure they were the ones who never saw the light of day again.
