Chapter 5 - The Edge of the Abyss

The morning of the incident arrived with heavy, gray storm clouds hanging over the estate. It was perfect weather for a tragedy. Julian had left early for a flight to New York. It was a trip Vanessa had organized, ensuring he wouldn't be in the house. She wanted no witnesses who might unexpectedly grow a conscience. Only Mrs. Howard and Vanessa remained in the massive, echoing mansion. Elena stayed in her room all morning, carefully wrapping her torso in a specialized orthopedic gel brace she had smuggled into the house weeks ago. It was thin enough to hide under a thick maternity cardigan, but strong enough to absorb the impact of blunt force. She couldn't completely eliminate the risk of a fall, but she could minimize it. She had studied the grand staircase meticulously. Twenty-two marble steps. But the camera angles were best halfway down. If she could control the fall, tuck her chin, and protect her stomach, she would survive. At 2:00 PM, she walked out of her room. She made her way to the second-floor landing overlooking the grand foyer. Down below, Mrs. Howard was reading a newspaper on the velvet sofa. Vanessa was coming out of the kitchen, holding a glass of iced water. "Vanessa!" Elena called out. Her voice echoed sharply through the quiet house. Vanessa stopped, looking up with obvious annoyance. "What now, Elena?" "I packed your bags," Elena said, pointing to a suitcase she had dragged out of the guest room. It was Vanessa's suitcase. Vanessa’s eyes widened in shock, then narrowed in pure rage. "What the hell do you think you're doing?" Vanessa snapped, dropping her glass on a side table and marching up the stairs. "You are leaving my house," Elena said, backing away slightly as Vanessa reached the landing. "Your house?" Vanessa laughed, a harsh, ugly sound. "Nothing here is yours!" Mrs. Howard stood up from the sofa below, watching the drama unfold. "Elena, stop making a scene and go back to your room!" Mrs. Howard ordered. "No!" Elena yelled, positioning herself exactly on the mark she had chosen. Right in the center of the high-definition camera hidden in the chandelier. "She is trying to poison me! I have proof!" Elena screamed, waving a random piece of paper. It was a blank receipt, but Vanessa didn't know that. Vanessa's face went pale, then flushed red with panic. If Elena actually had proof, everything was ruined. Vanessa lunged forward to grab the paper. Elena pulled it back. "Give it to me, you crazy bitch!" Vanessa shrieked, losing her carefully crafted composure. They struggled for a brief second. Elena looked directly into Vanessa's eyes. She saw the exact moment the mistress made her decision. Vanessa wasn't just trying to grab the paper anymore. She wanted to silence Elena. Permanently. With a terrifying scream of frustration, Vanessa planted both hands on Elena’s shoulders. And pushed. Hard. Elena didn't resist. She let gravity take over. The world tilted violently.
