Chapter 7 - The Trap is Sprung

The sound of sirens didn't build gradually. It erupted all at once, surrounding the mansion from every side. Red and blue lights flashed through the massive stained-glass windows, painting the foyer in violent colors. Mrs. Howard gasped, stepping back from Vanessa. "Who called the police?" Before Vanessa could answer, the heavy oak doors were thrown open. Detective Mateo Ruiz walked in, flanked by four uniformed officers and two paramedics. "Nobody move," Ruiz barked, his eyes sweeping the room. The paramedics instantly rushed to Elena. As they carefully placed a neck brace on her and lifted her onto a stretcher, Elena opened her eyes and gave Ruiz a tiny, almost imperceptible nod. She was okay. Vanessa immediately stepped forward, putting on her best crying face. "Oh, Officer, thank god you're here!" she wailed, wiping away non-existent tears. "It was horrible! My friend... she's not mentally stable. She attacked me! I tried to hold her, but she slipped and fell!" Mrs. Howard stepped up beside her, raising her chin haughtily. "I am Martha Howard. I witnessed the entire altercation. My daughter-in-law has been suffering from severe pregnancy psychosis. She violently assaulted this poor girl. The fall was entirely her own fault." Ruiz looked at Vanessa. Then at Mrs. Howard. He didn't write anything down in his notepad. He just smiled. It was a cold, terrifying smile. "Is that right?" Ruiz asked. "Yes! We need to call my son, Julian Howard immediately. He needs to know his wife has finally snapped," Mrs. Howard demanded. "Oh, Julian is already on his way. We intercepted his car on the way to the airport," Ruiz said casually. Right on cue, Julian burst through the front doors, looking frantic. "What is going on? Elena! Where is Elena?" he shouted, seeing the stretcher being rolled toward the ambulance. Vanessa ran to him, wrapping her arms around his waist. "Julian! It was awful! She tried to kill me, and then she threw herself down the stairs to frame me!" Julian looked at Ruiz, his face pale. "Is this true? My wife... she's not well." Ruiz sighed, pulling out a small tablet from his jacket. "You know, the funny thing about marble mansions," Ruiz said loudly, his voice echoing in the massive space. "They have great acoustics. But terrible blind spots." He tapped the screen. "Luckily, we brought our own eyes." Ruiz pressed a button on a remote control, overriding the mansion's smart TV in the adjacent living room. The massive 85-inch screen flickered to life. Crystal clear, 4K resolution. It showed the staircase. It showed Elena standing still. It showed Vanessa screaming in rage. And then, in undeniable, high-definition clarity, it showed Vanessa violently shoving a pregnant woman down twenty-two marble steps. The silence in the room was absolute. Julian backed away from Vanessa as if she had suddenly caught fire. Mrs. Howard’s mouth dropped open, her haughty posture crumbling into ash. "But wait," Ruiz said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "There's more." The video switched. It showed the kitchen, two weeks ago. Vanessa crushing pills into a powder. The audio played loud and clear over the home theater speakers. “The powder isn't working fast enough... I'll increase the dosage.” Then, a new clip. Julian's office. Julian and Vanessa. “When is she leaving, Julian?... Once the baby is born, my mother will arrange full custody. We'll pay her off.” Julian fell to his knees, burying his face in his hands. Vanessa was shaking violently, looking around for an exit that didn't exist. "Vanessa Vance," Ruiz said, stepping forward with handcuffs glinting in the blue light. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and tampering with food or drugs." He turned to Mrs. Howard. "Martha Howard, you are under arrest for conspiracy and acting as an accessory." Vanessa screamed as the metal clicked around her wrists. "No! It's fake! She set me up! Julian, do something!" Julian didn't look up. He was a broken man, realizing he had just lost everything. As they dragged the screaming mistress and the stunned mother-in-law out the door, Ruiz looked at Julian. "Your wife is going to the hospital," Ruiz said coldly. "Don't bother following her. She filed a restraining order against you yesterday. If you come within a hundred feet of her or that baby, I'll arrest you too."
