Chapter 6 - The Perfect Fall

The entire mansion fell silent when Elena’s body crashed onto the cold marble floor below. It wasn't a messy, tumbling fall. Thanks to her preparation, Elena had controlled her descent, sliding violently down the last eight steps and landing heavily on her side. The gel brace absorbed the worst of the impact, but the pain was still sharp and breathtaking. She let out a weak groan, then forced herself to go completely limp. Vanessa stood frozen on the staircase, panting heavily. For a split second, she looked triumphant. Then, realizing Mrs. Howard was watching, her face filled with fake terror. She quickly rushed down the stairs and threw herself into Mrs. Howard’s arms. “I didn’t want this to happen!” Vanessa whispered through dramatic, theatrical tears. “She came toward me first! She was attacking me! I only pushed her away because I was afraid!” Mrs. Howard stared down at Elena in disbelief. The pregnant woman lay completely still on the marble. Her hand rested protectively over her stomach. Her breathing appeared terribly weak. Her skin was ghostly pale. To anyone standing there, Elena looked like a woman who had lost everything in one terrible moment. A tragic, fatal accident caused by pregnancy madness. But behind her closed eyes, Elena was thinking clearly. The pain in her shoulder was intense, but her baby felt secure. There was no cramping, no bleeding. She just had to hold on a little longer. Vanessa continued her performance, raising her voice so everyone could hear, ensuring her "alibi" was established. “She has been poisoning this family since she arrived!” Vanessa cried, burying her face in Mrs. Howard's shoulder. “She never loved Julian. She only wanted his fortune, this house, and everything that belongs to him! She tried to kill me, Martha!” “Hush, dear, it’s alright. It was self-defense. I saw the whole thing,” Mrs. Howard soothed her, completely buying into the lie. Nobody noticed Elena’s fingers quietly searching inside her thick cardigan. Her secondary phone was waiting there in a specialized pocket. One tap to unlock. Then another to hit the speed dial. The call went through instantly. And suddenly, the fake fear disappeared from Elena’s expression. Her eyes opened. What remained was cold, absolute confidence. She covered the phone with her hand to muffle the sound and whispered into the microphone: “Detective Ruiz... it happened.” A short silence followed on the line. “Units are breached. Two minutes,” Ruiz's deep voice replied. Then she ended the call. Closed her eyes again. And returned to the role Vanessa believed she had created. The fall was genuine. The pain was undeniable. But Vanessa never understood one crucial thing... Elena had been preparing for this exact moment for months. The trap had sprung. And the steel jaws were about to snap shut.
