Chapter 10 - The Price of Reclaiming What Was Lost

The ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner of the Zurich penthouse was the only sound bridging the gulf between us.

Dominic stood frozen in the center of the room, my words echoing in the silence like a physical blow.

“A symptom?” Dominic repeated hoarsely, shaking his head in disbelief.

“Vivian, I gave you everything a woman could ever dream of having in this life.”

“I built an empire with your name on the foundation!”

“I made you the most feared, respected woman in the entire Midwest!”

“No, Dominic,” I interrupted, rising slowly to my feet and meeting his gaze with absolute clarity.

“You built a slaughterhouse, and you used me as the white silk curtain to hide the blood from the public.”

I pulled a thick manila folder from the desk drawer and tossed it onto the glass coffee table between us.

The folder landed with a dull thud, sliding to a stop against the base of a crystal vase.

Dominic looked down at the documents, his brow furrowing in confusion.

“What is this?” he asked.

“Those are the finalized, unconditional divorce papers drafted under international maritime and civil law,” I said, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Along with a complete, legally binding asset division agreement.”

Dominic didn't touch the folder; he looked at it as if it were a venomous snake coiled on the glass.

“I will never sign that,” Dominic snarled, his old, violent arrogance flaring up for a brief second.

“You are my wife, Vivian!”

“You swore an oath in front of God and five hundred witnesses that only death would separate us!”

I let out a soft, bitter laugh that cut straight through his manufactured rage.

“And you swore an oath to honor and cherish me, Dominic,” I replied, my voice dropping into a chilling register.

“Yet for seven years, you brought your whores into our home and paraded them in front of my face like livestock.”

“You sat in the corner of my study with a cigarette in your hand, watching other women demand my crown, waiting to see if my pride would finally break.”

“You didn't want a partner, Dominic.”

“You wanted an obedient queen who would manage your finances by day and stroke your monstrous ego by night while you lived like a savage.”

Dominic took a desperate step forward, closing the distance between us until I could feel the heat radiating from his broad chest.

He dropped to one knee before me, an act of sheer, unprecedented submission that would have sent shockwaves through the entire underworld if witnessed by his capos.

The most feared man in Chicago took my cold hands into his trembling palms, pressing his forehead against my knuckles.

“I was blind, Vivian,” Dominic choked out, his shoulders shaking with a sob he could no longer suppress.

“I took your loyalty for granted because you never wavered.”

“I thought you were unbreakable.”

“I thought no matter how far I strayed, you would always be the anchor that brought me back to solid ground.”

He looked up at me, tears glistening openly in the dark eyes that had ordered dozens of executions without blinking.

“I will burn Chicago to the ground for you,” he promised, his voice cracking with raw agony.

“I will strip Romano of his flesh, I will erase the Blake family from existence, and I will hand you the keys to every single holding company under my name.”

“Just sign the release code for the banks and come back with me.”

“Let me spend the rest of my life making this right.”

I stood motionless, looking down at the powerful man kneeling at my feet.

There was a time, perhaps three or four years ago, when this exact display of total surrender would have melted my heart and brought me back to his bed.

I had spent hundreds of lonely nights wishing Dominic would look at me with this exact level of desperate, devoted passion.

Yet, standing in that quiet Zurich room, looking at him on his knees, I felt absolutely nothing.

No anger.

No triumph.

No lingering spark of love.

There was only the hollow, peaceful void of complete detachment.

“It’s too late, Dominic,” I said softly, gently pulling my hands free from his desperate grip.

Dominic’s breath hitched in his throat as his empty hands hovered in the air between us.

“Why?” he whispered, his eyes wide with terror.

“Because the woman who loved you died the moment you brought Sienna into that study and let her put her hand on her stomach,” I answered, stepping back toward the glass window.

Before Dominic could speak again, his encrypted satellite phone erupted into a frantic, piercing ring inside his coat pocket.

He ignored it, staring at me as if his entire life were draining away.

The phone continued to chime relentlessly, three seconds between each burst.

“Answer it, Dominic,” I said calmly.

“It’s Marcus.”

“And whatever he has to say, you need to hear it.”

Trembling with an unspoken dread, Dominic reached into his coat and pressed the satellite receiver to his ear.

“What is it, Marcus?” Dominic barked hoarsely, never taking his eyes off my face.

Marcus’s voice exploded through the tiny speaker, loud enough for me to hear every panicked word across the room.

“Boss! The south-side docks have just been hit by federal tactical units and Romano’s private militia simultaneously!”

“Romano produced legal documents showing you abandoned your executive duties, and he has filed an emergency receivership claim with the federal court!”

“They’re raiding the penthouse right now, Dominic!”

“Chicago is falling apart, and if you don't return within twelve hours, Moretti Holdings will cease to exist!”

Dominic lowered the phone slowly, the color completely draining from his face until he looked like a living ghost.

The kingdom he had spent fifteen years building on blood and intimidation was being torn apart while he knelt on the floor of a Swiss apartment.

He looked at me, a silent, pleading question burning in his eyes.

He was waiting for me to pull out my cryptographic tablet, open the emergency legal firewall, and save him from the wolves, just as I had done a dozen times before.

I met his gaze with absolute tranquility.

Then, slowly and deliberately, I pointed toward the elevator doors.

“Your kingdom is burning, Dominic,” I said quietly, watching the final spark of hope die inside his soul.
