Chapter 4 - Shadows Fall Over Chicago

By sunrise, the absence of Vivian Moretti began to fracture the fragile ecosystem of the Chicago syndicate.

At the Moretti Holdings corporate headquarters downtown, the executive floor operated like a well-oiled machine driven by invisible clockwork.

For seven years, I had personally reviewed every contract, vetted every associate, and smoothed over every volatile dispute before it ever reached Dominic’s desk.

By ten o'clock that morning, the administrative department was already in a state of quiet panic.

Senior executives stood huddled around mahogany conference tables, staring helplessly at a stack of flagged accounts requiring executive authorization.

Marcus Vance strode into the executive suite with a heavy folder tucked beneath his arm, looking for Dominic.

He found the syndicate boss sitting behind his massive oak desk, staring intently at an empty coffee cup where I usually sat every morning at precisely 8:30 AM.

“Boss,” Marcus began, stepping cautiously into the office.

“We have a critical logistics issue with the Marseilles shipping dock delivery scheduled for Friday.”

Dominic didn’t look up immediately.

“Handle it through the standard protocols,” Dominic replied flatly.

“We can’t, sir,” Marcus countered, adjusting his collar nervously.

“The Marseilles contact refuses to release the cargo without Vivian’s direct sign-off and verification code.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened visibly as he finally raised his dark eyes to meet his head of security.

“Use my authorization code,” Dominic commanded, his voice dropping an octave.

“I tried, Boss,” Marcus admitted grimly.

“The overseas syndicate requires dual-authentication protocol. Your master key cannot bypass Vivian’s personal cryptographic signature without her active terminal online.”

Dominic slammed his fist against the desk hard enough to rattle the crystal decanter resting nearby.

“Get her on the secure satellite line immediately,” Dominic ordered, rising from his leather chair.

“I want her terminal patched through to my office right now.”

Marcus swallowed hard, stepping back slightly from the mounting fury radiating off his boss.

“Sir... we’ve been trying to ping her satellite terminal at the Wisconsin lake house for the past three hours,” Marcus confessed cautiously.

“The signal is bouncing off a dummy repeater unit left in the vehicle.”

Dominic’s breath caught in his throat as the chilling realization washed over him.

“What did you say?” Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously low.

“She’s not at the lake house, Mr. Moretti,” Marcus reported, laying the folder flat on the desk.

“Our surveillance teams checked the property ten minutes ago. The house is completely empty, and her primary passport was flagged crossing through customs at O'Hare early this morning under an alias.”

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Dominic stared at Marcus as if hearing a foreign language.

The woman who had never left his side for seven years—the woman who had calmly walked out of his study promising to go to the lake house—had vanished completely off the grid.

She hadn’t retreated to lick her wounds in the Wisconsin woods.

She had executed a flawless, premeditated escape right under his nose.

Dominic reached into his desk drawer and pulled out the platinum ring I had slid across the table the previous afternoon.

He squeezed the metal so hard his knuckles turned stark white.

For the first time since he took control of Moretti Holdings at the age of twenty-five, Dominic felt a cold spike of genuine panic pierce his chest.
