Chapter 13 - The Trap Closes from Across the Sea

While sirens bathed the Chicago riverbank in emergency colors, four thousand miles away in Zurich, I stood on the balcony watching the sun set over the snow-capped Alps.

The evening air was freezing, but it brought an exquisite clarity that I had not experienced in over a decade.

Christian Thorne stepped onto the stone terrace, holding a sleek black tablet in one hand and two glasses of vintage sparkling wine in the other.

“It is completely finished, Vivian,” Christian said, handing me a glass with a polite nod.

“Federal agents breached the southern docks fourteen minutes ago.”

“Anthony Romano was taken into custody without further resistance.”

“And what about the corporate documentation?” I asked, taking a delicate sip from my glass without turning my gaze from the mountains.

“The United States Attorney’s Office in Chicago has accepted the unredacted evidence packet we submitted via our encrypted legal portal this morning,” Christian confirmed.

“Every piece of financial fraud, every illegal dock contract, and every tax evasion scheme was conclusively tied to Romano’s secondary corporate shell.”

“Because you retained sole signatory authority over the legitimate parent company, Moretti Holdings itself has been placed under federal civil receivership rather than criminal forfeiture.”

A gentle smile touched my lips.

People in Chicago had spent seven years whispering behind my back that Vivian Moretti was nothing more than a passive trophy who tolerated a criminal's dark life for expensive clothes.

They never understood that survival in Dominic’s world required a mind sharper than any assassin's blade.

When I discovered Anthony Romano’s clandestine meetings with corrupt port authorities two years ago, I didn't tell Dominic immediately.

I knew that if I told Dominic, he would have simply sent a hit squad to put two bullets in Romano’s head, triggering a bloody street war that would have invited federal scrutiny into our home.

Instead, I quietly altered the corporate structure of Moretti Holdings.

I systematically rerouted every illicit distribution agreement through subsidiaries that carried Romano’s personal tax identification and legal authority.

I left the bait in the study safe: records that looked like an absolute goldmine of criminal evidence against Dominic, but were in fact a legal noose designed specifically for Anthony Romano.

I had known for months that a betrayal was coming.

I had prepared the board, set the pieces, and established the legal firewall to ensure that when the explosion finally occurred, I would be standing on another continent with every dollar of my independent fortune intact.

The only unpredictable variable in the entire equation had been Sienna Blake.

I hadn't anticipated that Romano would find an ambitious, foolish socialite stupid enough to volunteer as his delivery courier.

When Dominic brought her into my study that afternoon, expecting me to engage in another pathetic battle of female territorial pride, he thought he was testing my loyalty.

He had no idea that he was handing me the perfect, flawless exit ticket I had been waiting for.

By sliding my wedding ring across that table, I didn't surrender to Sienna.

I simply triggered the final sequence of my own liberation.

“What is the status of Dominic Moretti?” I asked softly, watching the last rays of daylight disappear behind the mountain ridges.

Christian checked the live telemetry on his tablet.

“He was not arrested, Vivian,” Christian reported carefully.

“Because of the separation documents you filed, and because your evidence explicitly cleared him of Romano’s distribution conspiracy, the federal prosecutors have no immediate grounds to detain him.”

“However, the legal assets of Moretti Holdings have been completely frozen pending full civil audit.”

“His criminal network has been effectively dismantled by the federal seizure of the ports.”

“The capos who survived the dock raid are already scattering across the country to avoid being named as co-conspirators.”

“Dominic is no longer the king of Chicago, Vivian.”

“He is simply a very rich, very lonely man living in a tomb of his own making.”

I took another sip of wine, feeling the cool liquid soothe my throat.

There was no triumphant joy in my heart, nor was there any lingering sorrow.

Dominic had wanted to be an absolute monarch who bowed to no law, no morality, and no commitment.

He had lived by the sword of his own unrestrained ego, and now that sword had severed the only real connection he had ever possessed in his entire life.

“Send the final dissolution decree to his personal attorneys in Chicago tomorrow morning, Christian,” I said calmly, stepping back inside the warm living room.

“I want my maiden name restored on every international passport by Friday.”

“Mrs. Vivian Moretti ceases to exist tonight.”

“Understood,” Christian replied, bowing his head with deep professional respect.

I walked toward the master bedroom of my Swiss penthouse, leaving the glass doors open to the crisp night wind.

Behind me, the city of Chicago was bleeding out its old sins in an ocean of flashing emergency lights.

Ahead of me lay an entire world that I could finally explore on my own terms, with no throne to defend and no monster to appease.
