Chapter 8 - Desperate Measures and the Broken Alliance

Back in Chicago, the rain poured down in relentless gray sheets, matching the grim atmosphere inside the Moretti penthouse.
Sienna Blake sat on a bench in the private courtyard outside the high-rise building, shivering beneath a ruined designer coat.
She had spent the last eighteen hours attempting to contact her friends, her socialite acquaintances, and the members of her inner circle.
Every single phone call had gone straight to voicemail.
The news had spread through Chicago’s elite like wildfire: Vivian Moretti had vanished, and Sienna Blake had been thrown out into the gutter.
In the cutthroat ecosystem of the city's high society, an outcast of the Moretti household was more dangerous than a carrier of a lethal plague.
Nobody dared to offer her shelter, and nobody answered her desperate pleas for money.
Her phone buzzed in her trembling palm, displaying an unlisted number with a local Chicago area code.
She swiped the screen with frantic haste, pressing the receiver to her ear.
“Hello? Please, you have to help me!” Sienna pleaded, her voice breaking into hysterical sobs.
“Calm yourself, you foolish girl,” a cold, gravelly voice hissed on the other end.
It wasn't Dominic.
It was Anthony Romano, the ambitious underboss who controlled the south-side distribution hubs for Moretti Holdings.
“Anthony!” Sienna gasped, her knuckles turning white around the phone.
“Dominic threw me out! He knows I don't know the codes! He knows Vivian left!”
“I know everything, Sienna,” Romano snapped with icy fury.
“You were supposed to seduce Dominic and convince him to transfer the lake house and the private trusts to your name over the course of six months.”
“You were supposed to give us time to extract Vivian’s administrative passwords before forcing her out!”
“Why the hell did you confront her yesterday afternoon with that ridiculous pregnancy bluff?”
Sienna bit her lower lip until the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.
“She was sitting right there, Anthony!” Sienna cried defensively.
“She looked so small and defeated! I thought if I pushed her just an inch, she would crumble and sign the divorce papers on the spot!”
“You thought?” Romano roared, his rage practically vibrating through the phone line.
“You thought you could outplay Vivian Moretti?”
“Vivian has been running the syndicate’s offshore logistics since you were in middle school, you brainless idiot!”
“Now the entire offshore system is frozen!”
“My operations on the south docks are stalled because the banks won't clear our payroll without her dual key!”
“What do I do, Anthony?” Sienna begged, tears streaming through her smeared mascara.
“Dominic’s men are looking for Vivian, but if he finds out I was feeding you information about his private schedule, he will execute me!”
“You're damn right he will,” Romano said, his tone turning sinister and deadly.
“Which is why you are going to fix this mess right now.”
“How? What can I possibly do?”
“Dominic is currently at his private gym downtown, trying to beat his frustration out on his sparring partners,” Romano instructed coldly.
“I am sending a car to pick you up in five minutes.”
“You are going to walk into the Moretti compound, and you are going to tell Dominic that Vivian didn't leave voluntarily.”
“You are going to tell him that Vivian sold our maritime access codes to the French syndicate weeks ago and staged her disappearance to frame you.”
Sienna froze in sheer terror.
“That's a lie! Dominic will see right through it!”
“Dominic is desperate, paranoid, and bleeding eighty-four million dollars,” Romano growled into the phone.
“He wants an enemy he can shoot, Sienna.”
“He cannot shoot Vivian because he doesn't know where she is.”
“Give him a reason to mobilize our soldiers against Laurent’s docks, and while the city is distracted by a gang war, my men will take the executive suites.”
Before Sienna could respond, a sleek black Cadillac pulled up to the curb, its tinted passenger window sliding down smoothly.
Two burly men in heavy wool coats stared at her through the rain.
Sienna realized with terrifying clarity that she was no longer an ambitious socialite climbing the ladder of underworld royalty.

She was a disposable pawn caught between two warring predators, and the board was about to collapse beneath her feet.
With trembling legs, she stepped into the back seat of the car, sealing her own fate in a war she had never possessed the intellect to understand.
