Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Gambit

By two o'clock in the afternoon, the private library of the penthouse was transformed into a tactical decoding center.
The three landscape paintings were mounted on heavy aluminum easels beneath high-intensity ultraviolet lights and polarizing optical scanners.
Two forensic technicians from Roman's private intelligence team worked quietly at a bank of monitors, isolating the microscopic dots embedded within the linseed oil and converting the optical data into thousands of encrypted text files.
Khloe sat curled in a leather armchair by the fireplace, a heavy wool blanket draped over her shoulders, holding a mug of black coffee that Roman had personally brewed and handed to her twenty minutes ago.
Her knuckles were still stained with dried powder burns from the Glock.
The door to the library opened, and Roman walked in, carrying an unencrypted satellite phone and a glass of scotch.
He looked across the room at the technicians, his expression completely unreadable.
"Is the primary ledger intact?" Roman asked.
The lead technician, an elderly man with thick spectacles, turned around from his monitor with a look of profound astonishment.
"It's not just intact, Mr. Caster."
"It's a complete master blueprint of the Moretti syndicate's entire corporate infrastructure."
"We have the routing numbers for seventeen offshore accounts in Zurich and Vaduz holding over two hundred and forty million dollars in laundered municipal funds."
"More importantly, we have the signed promissory notes from Vance Sterling and four sitting appellate judges confirming their monthly retainers."
"If this data is released to the federal grand jury in Washington, every capo from Manhattan to Boston will be indicted by midnight."
"Don Bernardo's empire won't just fall."
"It will be wiped out of existence."
Roman took a slow sip of his scotch, his gray eyes sliding toward Khloe.
"Send a sanitized copy of the judicial bribery files to Vance Sterling's personal, unmonitored fax at his private residence," Roman ordered smoothly.
"Include a cover note stating that if the federal warrants against my executive offices are not dismissed with prejudice within sixty minutes, the full file goes directly to the Inspector General of the Department of Justice."
"Understood, sir," the technician replied, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard.
"And Don Bernardo?" the technician asked.
"Send the old man an invitation," Roman said, a dark, victorious smirk spreading across his scarred face.
"A private meeting at seven o'clock tonight at the Castellani dry docks."
"Tell him to bring his surviving capos, his legal counsel, and the paperwork to transfer the terminal deeds to my holding group."
"If he refuses, his accounts in Zurich will be frozen before the banks close in Switzerland tomorrow morning."
The technicians bowed their heads and hurried out of the library, leaving Roman and Khloe alone in the warm amber glow of the fireplace.
Roman walked over to her chair and knelt down on one knee, his large frame lowering until his eyes were level with hers.
He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently wrapping around her cold hands, lifting the ceramic mug from her grip and setting it on the stone hearth.
"It's over, Khloe," he said softly.
"Your father's name will be cleared."
"The Morettis will never touch your family again."
"And your mother's transplant is scheduled for Thursday morning at eight."
Khloe looked into his pale gray eyes, seeing the raw power, the brutal intelligence, and the unexpected, overwhelming tenderness that had been hidden beneath his corporate armor for two long years.
Tears finally welled in her amber eyes, spilling over her lashes and tracing the smooth line of her cheeks.
"Why did you do this, Roman?" she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of the last twenty-four hours.
"You could have used that ledger to take the city without saving my mother."
"You could have handed me over to Marco to avoid a war."
"You don't care about anyone."
"You're a ghost who bleeds people dry."
Roman reached up, his thumb wiping away the tear track on her skin with shocking, reverent gentleness.
"I thought I was," he murmured, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly cadence that made her breath catch in her throat.
"I thought you were just an invisible clerk who kept my coffee hot and my schedule clean."
"I brought you to that gala because I was arrogant."
"I wanted to mock the world."
"Instead, the moment you walked down those marble stairs, you completely ruined me, Khloe."
"I saw the woman behind the disguise."
"I saw the fire, the courage, and the lethal beauty that every man in that room would have died to possess."
"And I realized that I would burn this entire city to the ground before I ever let another man take you from me."
Khloe's heart hammered against her ribs, the warmth of his hand against her cheek sending a surge of electric heat through her veins.
"I'm not a mobster's wife, Roman," she whispered, her lips parting slightly.
"I'm an accountant's daughter."
"I wear oversized sweaters and I read tax codes."
Roman leaned in closer, his lips brushing against the sensitive curve of her jaw, his breath hot against her neck.
"You can wear whatever you want, Khloe," he growled softly against her skin.
"You can run my companies, you can balance my ledgers, or you can never work another day in your life."
"But you are never hiding from the world again."
"And you are never leaving this room."
May you like
Before she could speak, Roman captured her lips in a deep, fierce, and all-consuming kiss that erased every remaining trace of fear, every shadow of her old life, and every doubt she had ever held about the monster who had brought her into the light.
She didn't pull away.
