Chapter 15 - The Ledger of the Heart

Midnight had long since passed when the private elevator opened into the penthouse on the sixty-fifth floor.

The city outside the panoramic glass was a sprawling sea of cold blue lights, wrapped in a blanket of fresh, pristine winter snow.

Khloe kicked off her high heels at the edge of the living room rug, letting out a long, contented sigh as her bare feet sank into the plush carpet.

She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass, looking down at the tiny, moving headlights sixty floors below.

The emerald necklace felt cool against her skin, a sparkling reminder of how completely her reality had shifted in the span of a month.

Soft footsteps sounded on the basalt floor behind her.

Roman approached, his dinner jacket discarded, his cuffs rolled back, holding two glasses of sparkling mineral water.

He handed one to Khloe, his fingers brushing against hers, sending that familiar, addictive current of warmth straight to her pulse.

"You terrified them tonight," Roman murmured, a proud, lazy smirk playing at the corner of his lips.

Khloe took a sip of the water, turning her head to look up at him.

"I didn't terrify them, Roman."

"The threat of you throwing them off Pier 42 terrified them."

"I merely informed them that their depreciation schedules were mathematically illiterate."

Roman laughed—a deep, genuine sound that rose from his chest, entirely unlike the cold sneer he used in boardrooms.

"Dominic Bianchi looked like he was going to pass out when you told him he was double-billing the fuel tariffs."

"He was double-billing," Khloe said, stepping closer until her back was lightly pressed against Roman's chest.

"And he's been doing it since nineteen-ninety-nine."

"He won't do it again."

Roman set his glass down on the console table and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against him.

He buried his face into the curve of her neck, inhaling the sweet, subtle scent of jasmine and rain that was uniquely hers.

"I have a confession to make," Roman whispered against her skin.

Khloe leaned her head back against his shoulder, her eyes closing.

"The great Roman Caster confesses to no one."

"I confess to you," he murmured, his hands resting possessively over her hips.

"That night in the office, when I told you to cancel the escort agency..."

"I didn't do it just to insult Don Bernardo."

Khloe turned in his arms, her amber eyes searching his face with sudden curiosity.

"What do you mean?"

Roman reached up, his thumb tracing the soft contour of her lower lip.

"For two years, I watched you walk into my office every single morning."

"You wore those horrible, frayed sweaters."

"You wore those ridiculous shoes."

"You pulled your hair back until your eyes looked strained, and you hid behind those oversized glasses."

"And every single day, I would stare at the curve of your neck when you set down my coffee."

"I would listen to the cadence of your voice when you read the manifests."

"I knew you were hiding something."

"I knew you were lying about who you were."

"And it drove me out of my goddamned mind."

Khloe’s breath hitched in her throat, her hands coming up to rest against his broad chest, feeling the steady, thumping rhythm of his heart.

"You knew?"

"I didn't know the specifics," Roman admitted softly, his gray eyes burning into hers.

"I didn't know about your father or the ledger."

"All I knew was that there was a fire burning inside this quiet, invisible girl that I desperately wanted to ignite."

"I bought that midnight-blue dress because I wanted to tear down your walls."

"I wanted to see the woman you were keeping from me."

"I thought taking you to the gala would be an amusement."

"A game to pass the time."

"Instead, the moment you stepped out of that car, I realized that I had handed my entire soul over to my assistant."

Khloe looked up at the brutal, unyielding warlord of the city, seeing the raw vulnerability laid bare in his eyes.

She reached up, her fingers tangling into the dark hair at the nape of his neck, pulling his face down toward hers.

"You're a very arrogant man, Mr. Caster," she whispered, her lips brushing against his with teasing warmth.

"And you're a very dangerous woman, Miss Hayes," Roman growled softly.

"What are your terms for continuing our arrangement?"

Khloe smiled—a brilliant, breathtaking smile that belonged to a woman who had fought through the fire and claimed everything she had ever lost.

"Full executive transparency," she whispered against his lips.

"A shared balance sheet."

"And you never order me to wear orthotic loafers again."

Roman sealed the contract with a kiss—deep, fierce, and breathless—lifting her off her feet as the snow fell silently over an empire that was finally, completely theirs.
