Chapter 5 - The Shadow Over the Glass

The sound of Roman's palm striking Marco Moretti's throat was like the crack of a pistol shot inside the marble rotunda.

Marco's two bodyguards instantly reached for the holsters concealed beneath their dinner jackets, but before their hands could clear the silk lining, the metallic clicks of four suppressed weapons sounded from the shadows behind Roman.

Roman's personal security detail—former military contractors who answered only to his private bank accounts—had stepped out from behind the velvet drapes, their barrels leveled directly at the guards' foreheads.

Marco was pinned three inches off the floor, his face darkening to a bruised purple, his patent leather shoes scraping against the polished stone.

Roman leaned in close, his face inches from Marco's ear, his gray eyes burning with an unhinged, lethal ferocity that terrified even the seasoned capos watching from twenty feet away.

"You say another word to her," Roman whispered, the volume low enough that only Marco and Khloe could hear, "and I will tear your tongue out of your skull and feed it to the stray dogs on Pier 42."

"I don't give a damn about your father's truce."

"I don't give a damn about the Commission."

"Touch her, look at her, or breathe the same air she breathes, and you won't live long enough to inherit this blood-soaked empire."

Marco's eyes were wide with genuine terror.

He had spent his whole life terrorizing shopkeepers, extortion targets, and frightened young women who had no one to defend them.

He had never faced a monster who genuinely did not care if the world burned as long as he destroyed his enemy first.

"Roman!" a booming, gravelly voice echoed across the rotunda.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea.

An elderly man in a wheelchair, pushed by a stone-faced capo with graying hair, rolled into the center of the alcove.

It was Don Bernardo Moretti.

Seventy-four years old, his frame shrunken by cancer, but his eyes still possessed the cold, reptilian cruelty that had allowed him to eliminate three rival families in the late nineties.

Don Bernardo raised a single, spotted hand.

"Release my son, Caster," the old man commanded, his voice trembling with age but heavy with authority.

"You violate the hospitality of this house."

Roman held Marco against the pillar for two more agonizing seconds, ensuring the young man understood his life hung on a thread, before releasing his grip.

Marco crashed to the marble floor on his hands and knees, coughing violently and clutching his bruised throat.

Roman straightened his tuxedo jacket, smoothed his cuffs, and turned toward the old Don without the slightest hint of remorse.

"Your son forgot his manners, Bernardo," Roman said coldly.

"He needs to be reminded that the docks do not belong to the Morettis."

"And neither does my companion."

Don Bernardo's rheumy eyes shifted from Roman toward Khloe, who remained standing with perfect poise beside the black marble pillar.

The old man's gaze was entirely different from his son's.

It was not filled with lust.

It was filled with a chilling, analytical recognition.

He stared at the sharp, aristocratic line of her jaw.

He stared at the deep amber color of her eyes.

He stared at the delicate, unyielding posture that belonged to someone who had grown up around power, even if she had spent years hiding in the shadows of an office cubicle.

"Who are you, girl?" Don Bernardo asked, his raspy voice cutting through the heavy silence.

Khloe felt a cold drop of sweat trace the line of her spine beneath the silk.

She knew that look.

Don Bernardo had been the man who ordered the liquidation of her grandfather's shipping firm thirty years ago, setting off the chain of financial ruin that had driven her father into the arms of loan sharks.

If the old monster connected her face to the Hayes lineage, the pretense of being a simple assistant would vanish, and she would become a loose thread that needed to be burned.

"My name is Khloe, sir," she replied smoothly, keeping her voice completely steady.

"I am Mr. Caster's executive assistant."

"She is an employee, Bernardo," Roman interjected sharply, stepping between them once again to shield her from the old man's piercing scrutiny.

"Nothing more."

Don Bernardo leaned back in his wheelchair, his wrinkled fingers drumming against the polished armrests.

A faint, sinister smile touched the corners of his paper-thin lips.

"An employee does not wear thirty carats of flawless diamonds around her neck, Roman," Don Bernardo said softly.

"An employee does not speak to the heir of the Five Boroughs as if he were a delinquent schoolboy."

"You brought a viper into my house, Caster."

"And you brought her because you think you are already strong enough to take my seat at the head of the table."

The old Don raised his hand again, signaling to his guards.

"The gala is over for you, Roman."

"Take your woman, take your private army, and get off my estate."

"We will discuss the container concessions for the winter at the Commission meeting on Tuesday."

"And we will see if your secretary is quite so clever when the bill comes due."

Marco was hauled to his feet by his bodyguards, his face twisted in venomous hatred as he glared at Roman and Khloe, his fingers still tracing the red marks on his throat.

Roman did not wait for further pleasantries.

He reached down, took Khloe's hand in his, and pulled her forcefully toward the exit.

"We're leaving," Roman said through gritted teeth.

They walked out of the ballroom under the dead, watchful silence of two hundred mobsters and their silent wives.

The cold night air hit Khloe's bare shoulders like an electric shock as they descended the front steps toward the waiting Maybach.

The driver had the engine running, the door already swinging open.

Roman practically shoved her inside before throwing his own heavy frame onto the leather seat and slamming the door shut with a concussive thud.

"Drive," Roman barked through the intercom.

"Fast."

The Mercedes lunged forward, tires screaming against the damp gravel, racing past the heavy iron gates and out onto the dark highway toward the city.

Inside the cabin, the silence was deafening.

Roman tore off his black bow tie, ripped open the top two buttons of his collar, and dragged both hands down his face.

His breathing was ragged, his chest heaving as if he had just run a marathon.

Khloe sat back against the leather, staring down at her lap, her hands trembling so violently that the satin clutch dropped onto the floor mat.

She had survived.

She had looked the devil in the eye and walked out alive.

"Who the hell are you?" Roman asked suddenly, his voice low, dangerous, and completely stripped of his usual corporate detachment.

He turned toward her in the dim light of the cabin, his gray eyes drilling into her with terrifying intensity.

"You're not just an assistant who went to a state college."

"You didn't blink when Marco threatened you."

"And Don Bernardo looked at you as if he had seen a ghost from thirty years ago."

Khloe slowly lifted her head.

The contact lenses burned her eyes, the diamond choker felt like a collar of ice against her windpipe, and the exhaustion of keeping her disguise intact for two years finally cracked.

"I am exactly what you hired, Mr. Caster," she said, her voice trembling with raw, unfiltered venom.

"A woman trying to keep her family alive."

"And tonight, because of your childish, arrogant ego, because you wanted to play a practical joke on old men, you just put a target on my back that will never wash off."

Roman leaned across the narrow space between the seats, his large hand reaching out and cupping her jaw with shocking, sudden firmness.

May you like

His thumb brushed against the dark red lipstick on her lower lip, his gray eyes darkening with an emotion that was no longer anger, no longer pride, but an all-consuming, terrifying obsession.

"Then I guess you're not going back to your cubicle, Khloe," Roman whispered, his thumb pressing lightly against her pulse point, feeling the frantic, wild beat of her blood.
