Chapter 14 - The Syndicate's New Sovereign

Three weeks later, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in the warm, glittering radiance of crystal chandeliers and polished bronze.
The Emergency Conclave of the Eastern Seaboard Syndicate had been convened at Roman Caster's direct command.
Seventy capos, bosses, and major syndicate shareholders from five different states sat around a massive oval table of polished dark cherry.
The air was thick with the scent of expensive cigars, fine cognac, and an uneasy, electric tension.
Don Bernardo Moretti was dead.
The old man had suffered a massive stroke at his Westchester home five days after surrendering the terminal deeds, passing away without ever speaking another word.
Marco Moretti had taken his remaining personal funds and fled to an anonymous villa in Sicily, knowing that his life in the United States was forfeit.
The throne of the underworld was vacant.
The heavy double doors at the head of the ballroom swung open.
The room fell instantly silent.
Roman Caster walked through the threshold, commanding, formidable, and radiating an aura of total, unchallenged supremacy.
He was dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue dinner jacket with black silk lapels, his stride measured, powerful, and arrogant.
On his right arm walked Khloe Hayes.
The entire conclave stopped breathing.
Khloe was a vision of lethal, aristocratic royalty.
She wore a gown of liquid emerald silk that draped effortlessly over her shoulders, flowing down the contours of her body before sweeping the floor with an understated, elegant train.
Around her throat hung a breathtaking necklace of square-cut emeralds and platinum, a personal gift Roman had commissioned from a master jeweler in Paris.
Her dark mahogany hair fell in polished, glossy waves across one bare shoulder, and her amber eyes scanned the room of hardened killers with the cold, assessing detachment of an empress inspecting her troops.
There was no oversized sweater.
There were no thick, sliding frames.
There was only the woman who had brought down the Moretti dynasty and taken her seat at the right hand of the devil.
Roman guided her to the head of the massive oval table, where two identical high-backed leather armchairs had been placed beneath the central chandelier.
He did not sit down immediately.
He pulled out Khloe's chair, waited until she was seated with regal poise, and then took his own place beside her, resting his forearms against the dark cherry wood.
The bosses looked at each other, their faces filled with a mixture of awe, caution, and profound respect.
"Gentlemen," Roman began, his gravelly voice echoing effortlessly across the quiet room.
"The era of the Morettis is over."
"The archaic blood oaths, the petty territorial wars, and the disorganized extortion rackets that invited federal scrutiny are finished."
"From this day forward, all freight, all logistics, and all financial clearing for the Eastern Seaboard will run through the Caster Group."
"The distribution of territory will be determined by efficiency, compliance, and strict adherence to the new operational standards."
Roman paused, his cold gray eyes sweeping across the table of seasoned capos.
"And all financial audits, customs ledgers, and revenue splits will be overseen directly by my partner."
He turned his head slightly toward Khloe, an undeniable flash of pride burning in his eyes.
"Khloe Hayes is the Executive Comptroller of this syndicate."
"Her word carries the weight of my signature."
"Her orders carry the force of my guns."
"If any man in this room disrespects her, questions her authority, or steps out of line with her figures..."
Roman leaned forward, his voice dropping into a menacing whisper that sent a chill through the spine of every boss present.
"...you will answer to me personally."
Dominic Bianchi, the veteran underboss who had tried to mock Khloe at the winter gala three weeks ago, was the first to move.
He stood up from his chair, smoothed the front of his suit, and bowed his head respectfully toward Khloe.
"Welcome, Miss Hayes," Dominic said, his voice entirely devoid of its previous insolence.
"The Brooklyn dry docks are prepared to submit our books for your review whenever you are ready."
One by one, every capo, underboss, and territory holder around the table rose to their feet.
They raised their crystal glasses in silent, unanimous submission.
Khloe looked around the room, feeling the absolute weight of their surrender.
She did not smile.
She did not gloat.
She simply raised her glass of vintage champagne, touched the rim lightly to Roman's, and took a slow, composed sip.

The mouse had not just entered the wolves' den.
She had become the master of the pack.
