Chapter 12 - The Betrayal Within

The stainless-steel commercial kitchen was quiet, bathed in the soft hum of cooling units and natural morning light.

Norah sat perched on the edge of the high metal stool, blowing gently across the surface of a fresh cup of tea Leo had poured for her.

Leo stood leaning against the marble island opposite her, his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

“Santino is licking his wounds across the county line,” Leo began, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

“His vanguard was completely shattered, but rats always find a way to crawl back through the floorboards.”

“You think he had help from inside the estate?” Norah asked, setting her teacup down on the metal surface.

“I know he did,” Leo replied grimly.

“The RPG strike hit our weakest perimeter blind spot precisely at the exact moment our automated electronic sensors malfunctioned.”

“That kind of precision doesn't happen by accident.”

“It requires an inside man with security clearance.”

Norah felt a cold chill run down her spine as the reality of her position set in.

“And do you know who it is?” she asked.

Leo pushed himself off the island and walked slowly toward her, stopping just inches away.

“We found a burner phone hidden inside the barracks locker of the head security supervisor,” Leo said quietly.

“Outgoing encrypted calls placed directly to Santino’s inner circle.”

“He’s already been dealt with, Norah.”

“You won't have to worry about looking over your shoulder while you're working with my father.”

Norah looked up into his pale gray eyes, seeing the ruthless efficiency required to run an empire, balanced instantly by the fierce, protective warmth he directed toward her.

“You carry a terrifying amount of weight on your shoulders, Leo,” she whispered, the professional boundary softening into something dangerously intimate.

Leo reached out slowly, his large, rough hand coming up to gently tuck a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear.

His fingertips grazed her cheekbone, sending a sudden, electric shockwave straight through her veins.

“My world is violent, chaotic, and unforgiving, Norah,” Leo murmured, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion.

“It’s no place for someone like you.”

“And yet, here I am,” Norah countered softly, refusing to shrink back from his touch.

“Because you are the only person who looked at my father and saw a man instead of a monster,” Leo said, his gaze dropping momentarily to her lips before rising back to her eyes.

Before the tension could snap completely into something neither of them could take back, the sharp chime of the kitchen service intercom interrupted the silence.

Leo pulled his hand back slowly, letting out a long, controlled breath as he turned away to answer the call.

“Speak,” Leo commanded into the wall speaker.

“Boss, the accountant from the Palermo shipping docks is on line two,” a guard's voice crackled through the small speaker.

“He says there's a problem with the new manifests.”

Leo closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, letting out a heavy sigh of exhaustion.

“Transfer it to my private study,” Leo muttered before clicking the speaker off.

He turned back to look at Norah, a tired, apologetic smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“Duty calls,” he said with bitter irony.

“Go finish your tea, Norah.”

“I’ll have one of the drivers take you back into the city as soon as you're done.”

Norah watched him stride briskly out of the kitchen, realizing that the war outside their temporary sanctuary was never truly finished.
