Chapter 13 - The Standing Lion

Two weeks later, the crisp October air had turned sharp and biting, frosting the windows of the Moretti estate.
The rehabilitation sessions had evolved from agonizing physical torture into disciplined, rigorous athletic training.
Vincenzo Moretti could now walk the entire length of his expansive bedroom using only a light quad-cane for support.
His voice had partially returned, replaced by a deep, gravelly rasp that carried the unmistakable weight of command.
Today, however, a much larger test awaited the aging patriarch downstairs in the formal receiving hall.
The executive commission of the eastern syndicate had demanded an audience, whispering rumors that the Don was permanently incapacitated and ripe for a hostile takeover.
Leo had given his father a choice to remain hidden in the suite, but Vincenzo had refused with an angry, defiant wave of his hand.
Now, standing outside the heavy double doors of the formal hall, Norah stood beside Leo in her crisp white medical coat, holding her clipboard like a shield.
“Are you certain he’s ready for this?” Norah asked quietly, looking up at Leo with genuine concern in her eyes.
“If he isn't ready, the entire family will tear itself apart by nightfall,” Leo replied grimly, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored suit.
“My father built this empire on fear and absolute respect.”
“Today, he has to prove he hasn't forgotten how to wield both.”
With a sharp nod, Leo reached out and pulled the heavy mahogany doors wide open.
Inside the vast, wood-paneled hall, a dozen high-ranking capos and syndicate elders sat in velvet chairs around a long mahogany conference table.
Santino Moretti sat near the head of the table, wearing an arrogant smirk that suggested he considered himself the new master of the house.
When the double doors swung open, every head in the room turned toward the entrance.
Silence fell over the room like a physical blanket.
Vincenzo Moretti walked through the doorway under his own power.
He leaned heavily on his silver-handled cane, his right leg moving with a slow, deliberate stiffness, but his posture was fiercely upright.
His silver hair gleamed in the chandelier light, and his dark eye burned with the terrifying intensity of an apex predator waking from a winter sleep.
Santino’s arrogant smirk instantly evaporated, turning into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror.
Several capos instinctively rose halfway out of their chairs in stunned, involuntary reverence.
Vincenzo walked slowly to the head of the table, every tap of his cane echoing like a death knell against the hardwood floor.
He stopped directly behind the high-backed leather chair, gripping the polished wood with his functioning left hand.
He swept his dark, piercing gaze across the entire room, letting the heavy silence stretch until men literally began to sweat under their collars.
Then, drawing deep from his chest, Vincenzo forced a single, razor-sharp word through his damaged vocal cords.
“Sit.”
The command was obeyed instantly.
Every single capo dropped back into their seats with synchronized speed, their eyes glued to the floor in absolute submission.
Santino looked like he had just seen a ghost, his hands trembling violently against the armrests.
Vincenzo turned his head slightly toward Leo, giving one microscopic nod of approval.
Leo stepped forward, his voice cutting through the hall like a drawn blade.
“The leadership of this family has not changed,” Leo announced to the silent room.
“And anyone who believes otherwise is welcome to stand up and discuss it with my father right now.”

Not a single man in the room moved an inch.
Norah watched from the shadows of the doorway, a profound sense of awe washing over her as she realized she had helped resurrect a sleeping dragon.
