Chapter 3 - The Midnight Kitchen and the Cedar Scent

Norah reached the halfway point of the sweeping grand mahogany staircase before her nervous system completely mutinied.
The sudden crash of fading adrenaline turned her knees into warm gelatin.
A wave of icy cold sweat broke out across the nape of her neck, blurring her vision.
She dropped her medical bag and threw her left arm around the polished wooden banister to keep from tumbling headlong down the flight of stairs.
She stood there in the echoing quiet of the empty mansion, breathing through her teeth and cursing herself for letting her temper overrule her survival instincts.
A voice floated up from the shadows of the lower landing, cutting through the silence like a sharp blade.
Norah stiffened her spine, refusing to look weak, and turned to face the gloom.
Leo emerged from beneath the stained-glass window, the multi-colored light washing over his tailored shoulders like spilled wine.
She flashed a defensive, pain-fueled smile, using sarcasm as a shield.
Leo ignored the rhetorical question entirely.
He looked down with clinical precision at the dark purple contusion visible beneath her rolled-up scrub pant leg.
He began climbing the stairs slowly, step by deliberate step, until he stopped on the single step directly below her.
Even with the height advantage of the step, they were almost perfectly eye-to-eye.
Norah let out a short, bitter laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete.
Leo studied her face with an intensity that felt heavy enough to leave physical bruises.
There was no posturing, no boardroom negotiation tactics, and no veiled threats in his eyes.
He could see with absolute clarity that she genuinely didn't give a damn about the Moretti family crest or their underworld empire.
She cared only about range of motion, muscle fiber elasticity, and whether a stubborn old man walked again.
He gave a short, commanding nod toward the back of the house.
Norah clutched the handle of her medical bag tighter against her hip, her defensive walls instantly shooting back up.
Leo didn't wait for her verbal agreement.
He simply turned his back and walked toward the rear corridor, assuming compliance.
Norah hesitated for three full seconds, weighing her professional ethics against her throbbing leg, before following him down into the sprawling commercial kitchen.
The massive stainless-steel culinary space was completely deserted, stripped of chefs, dishwashers, and terrified servants.
Leo pointed a finger toward a heavy, high-backed stainless-steel stool sitting beside the marble island.
Norah limped over and perched gingerly on the edge of the seat, resting her sore leg.
Leo yanked open a massive industrial refrigerator door, pulling out a sealed bag of ice cubes.
He grabbed a clean white cloth napkin from a nearby stack and dumped a handful of ice inside, wrapping it tightly.
He walked back across the gleaming tile floor.
Instead of tossing the makeshift ice pack up to her like a casual offering, Leo dropped heavily onto one knee right there on the slate floor.
Norah blinked in genuine astonishment, her eyes widening as she looked down at the syndicate boss kneeling at her feet.
Leo commanded her with a tone that brooked no argument.
Norah froze as his large, calloused hands reached out toward her lower leg.
He gently rolled the fabric of her scrub pants upward, exposing the swollen, ugly purple welt stamped into her skin by his father's cane.
His fingers were impossibly rough, scarred from decades of physical violence and weapon handling.
Yet the pressure he applied as he positioned the ice pack against her shin was remarkably, almost shockingly tender.
The sudden icy contact made her hiss softly through her teeth as the acute pain began to numb into dull relief.
Leo kept his gaze fixed firmly on her injury, his voice dropping into a register reserved for private demons.
Norah looked down at the dark crown of his head, feeling the surreal absurdity of her current employment situation crashing down around her.
Leo looked up slowly, meeting her eyes with a heavy, unspoken confession resting in his gray irises.
A profound silence stretched between them, filled only by the distant hum of industrial refrigeration units.
Norah swallowed hard, feeling the magnetic pull of the dangerous gravity surrounding the Moretti family closing in around her heart.
May you like
She realized then that Leo Moretti carried a burden far heavier than his paralyzed father.
He was a man holding together a breaking kingdom with his bare hands while everyone around him waited for him to bleed.
