Chapter 14 - The Final Session

The contract stipulated a strict two-month term, and by the middle of November, Norah Hayes had officially worked her final scheduled hour at the Moretti estate.
Her heavy canvas medical bag sat zipped and waiting on the console table by the double doors.
Her student loan account had been completely wiped clean three days prior, the wire transfer clearing with terrifying efficiency.
She should have felt liberated, ecstatic, and eager to return to the quiet anonymity of her normal life in the city.
Instead, a heavy, sinking emptiness anchored itself somewhere deep inside her chest.
Vincenzo Moretti stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the emerald lawns without his cane, leaning lightly against the glass frame.
He had graduated from physical therapy sessions to independent daily walks.
He turned his head slowly as Norah adjusted the straps of her coat.
“You are leaving,” Vincenzo rasped, his voice still rough and broken, but entirely clear.
It was the longest complete sentence he had spoken directly to her since the day she arrived.
Norah offered a soft, melancholic smile, walking over to stand beside the aging patriarch.
“My work here is done, Vincenzo,” she said gently, using his first name with the easy familiarity earned through weeks of blood, sweat, and defiance.
“The muscles are holding.”
“The neurological pathways are firing on their own.”
“You don't need a physical therapist anymore.”
Vincenzo reached out his left hand and placed it firmly over her forearm, his grip warm and steady.
“You gave me back my life, Miss Hayes,” the old man said, every word chosen with deliberate respect.
“In this house, we do not forget debts.”
Norah swallowed hard against the sudden lump in her throat, blinking rapidly to keep the stinging tears at bay.
“Take care of yourself, Vincenzo,” she whispered, patting his hand gently.
“And stop throwing things at your guards.”
A faint, rare smile touched the corners of the old man’s mouth.
She picked up her medical bag, took one last lingering look around the Venetian-style suite, and walked out the door for the very last time.
She descended the grand staircase with steady steps, expecting to find the hallway empty.
Instead, Leo Moretti was waiting for her at the bottom landing.
He wore a simple black turtleneck and tailored charcoal trousers, his hands tucked casually into his pockets.
His pale gray eyes tracked her every movement as she reached the bottom step.
“The car is warmed up outside,” Leo said, his voice unusually quiet and restrained.
“It will take you back to your apartment.”
Norah stopped two steps above him, looking down into his striking face.
“Is this where we say goodbye, Mr. Moretti?” she asked, testing the heavy silence between them.
Leo stepped up onto the lower stair, closing the distance between them until he was standing right in front of her.
Even on the step below, he towered over her, radiating that familiar, intoxicating scent of crushed cedar, cold rain, and expensive sandalwood.
“I don't do goodbyes, Norah,” Leo murmured, reaching out to gently trace the line of her jaw with his thumb.
“Especially not with the only woman who ever had the courage to call me out on my bullshit.”
Norah’s breath hitched, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as his thumb brushed across her bottom lip.
“And what do you call this then?” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
“I call this an intermission,” Leo replied, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to lock into her eyes.
“Because once my father’s empire is fully secured and my enemies are permanently buried, I intend to drive straight into the city and find your front door.”
Norah let out a shaky, breathless laugh, feeling all her professional armor finally melt away completely.
“Make sure you don't bring a cane with you when you do,” she teased softly.
Leo’s lips curved into a slow, devastatingly handsome smile.

“I promise to come unarmed.”
He leaned in slowly, giving her all the time in the world to pull away, but Norah closed the remaining distance herself.
