Chapter 13 - THE BOARDROOM OF QUEENS: EXPANDING THE STERLING EMPIRE

Back at the downtown corporate headquarters—now officially rebranded as Sterling Global Enterprises—the atmosphere was charged with the electric energy of total reinvention.
The old executives who had cowered in the corners two days before were gone, replaced by a hand-picked team of brilliant, fiercely loyal professionals vetted personally by Marcus and Daniel.
I sat at the head of the massive glass boardroom table, wearing a charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit that commanded absolute authority, reviewing the quarterly financial projections displayed on the smart-screen wall.
Daniel sat to my right, turning a silver pen between his fingers with a calm, analytical expression. “The hostile acquisition of Apex’s remaining patent portfolio is complete. Our market share in secure cloud infrastructure has just increased by four hundred percent.”
Marcus sat to my left, sliding a thick ledger across the table. “And our credit rating is pristine. The banks are lining up to finance our next expansion phase across the eastern seaboard.”
I looked down at the quarterly revenue report, seeing numbers that Derek had spent years lying about, embezzling to cover up, and stressing over—numbers that now flowed naturally, effortlessly, into our family’s secure accounts.
“And Vanessa?” I asked quietly.
Ethan didn't look up from his tablet, where he was monitoring network traffic across three different continents. “Evicted, broke, and currently facing six federal counts of corporate conspiracy and asset tampering. Her landlord threw her remaining luggage into a dumpster on 4th Street this morning, and her credit cards were permanently blocked by noon yesterday.”
A quiet sense of closure settled over my chest.
Not satisfaction born of cruelty, but the profound, unshakeable peace of justice delivered precisely, cleanly, and without a single raised voice.
“Good,” I said, closing the leather folder with a soft, decisive snap. “Let’s finalize the acquisition of the downtown logistics center. I want our new philanthropic foundation launched by the end of the month, focusing specifically on legal aid and family advocacy for mothers in crisis.”
Daniel smiled—a rare, brilliant expression of absolute pride that mirrored the way our father used to look at us when we solved our toughest childhood puzzles.

“You’re going to run this empire better than anyone ever dreamed, Claire,” Daniel said softly.
“I’m not running an empire,” I replied, standing up from my chair and smoothing down my jacket as my brothers rose in unison around the table. “I’m building a fortress. And nobody will ever threaten my family again.”
