Chapter 8 - THE CHESSBOARD WIDENS: WHEN THE MISTRESS DISCOVERS THE PRICE OF GREED

While Daniel and Marcus dismantled Apex Innovations from the top down, Ethan and Luke were busy tracking down the collateral damage of Derek’s collapsing life—specifically, the ambitious, gold-digging mistress who had thought she was stepping into a life of luxury.
Vanessa sat in her brand-new, ultra-modern luxury apartment in the trendy arts district—an apartment Derek had leased for her using corporate funds under a fraudulent shell company name.
She was pouring herself a glass of expensive champagne, still recovering from the shock of being publicly humiliated by my brothers in the kitchen the night before, comforting herself with the delusional belief that Derek would somehow fix everything once he posted bail.
The sharp, authoritative buzz of the penthouse intercom pierced the quiet of her apartment.
Vanessa frowned, walking over to the video monitor and pressing the talk button with an irritated snap. “Who is it? If this is the leasing office, rent is already paid through—!”
“Open the door, Vanessa,” Luke’s calm, flat voice echoed through the speaker.
Vanessa froze, her hand hovering over the button as a cold spike of adrenaline shot straight down her spine. “How... how did you find me? Go away or I’m calling the police!”
“The police are already here, Vanessa,” Luke replied smoothly. “Or rather, the federal marshals accompanied by the property management enforcement team. You have precisely ten minutes to pack your designer bags before the lock codes are legally changed and all assets purchased with embezzled corporate funds are seized as stolen property.”
On the monitor screen, Vanessa could see Luke standing casually in the hallway, flanked by two uniformed federal officers holding a stack of court-ordered asset forfeiture warrants.
Panic seized her chest, making it impossible to breathe.
She rushed to her bedroom, throwing open her walk-in closet and frantically stuffing designer handbags, shoes, and silk dresses into oversized suitcases, her hands shaking so violently she dropped three different Chanel bottles onto the hardwood floor where they shattered into a thousand glittering shards of glass.
“You can't do this!” Vanessa shrieked at the closed door, tears of rage and humiliation streaming down her face. “Derek promised me this apartment! He promised me everything!”
“Derek doesn't own a toothbrush anymore, let alone a luxury penthouse,” Luke’s voice drifted calmly through the apartment wall. “And by the way, the Internal Revenue Service has just flagged your personal bank accounts for receiving unreported gifts derived from corporate embezzlement. You’ll be auditing your lifestyle from a very small, very gray room by the end of the week.”
The heavy thud of federal boots echoed outside her door.

The locks clicked with a sharp, mechanical finality.
Vanessa fell to her knees among her scattered designer shoes, finally realizing the horrifying truth: she hadn't stolen a rich man; she had caught a falling anchor that had dragged her down into the exact same abyss.
