Chapter 7 - THE CORPSE OF APEX INNOVATIONS: DISMANTLING THE TECH FRAUD

By mid-morning, the illusion of Derek’s grand tech empire had completely dissolved under the harsh, unblinking glare of legal and financial reality.
Daniel, Marcus, and I sat around the massive glass-topped conference table on the top floor of the Apex Innovations tower—a building Derek had rented with borrowed money to project an image of untouchable success.
The panoramic windows offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline, but inside the room, the atmosphere was as cold and clinical as a morgue.
The remaining junior executives and administrative staff sat huddled in the corner chairs, pale, trembling, and terrified that the axe was about to fall on them as well.
The heavy glass doors swung open, and the interim court-appointed receiver stepped inside, flanked by two federal marshals, holding a thick stack of pink slip notices and asset seizure warrants.
“Is Claire Sterling present?” the receiver asked, his voice echoing loudly off the polished concrete floors.
I raised my hand calmly, sitting straight in the executive leather chair that Derek had once forbidden me from even touching, warning me that my "domestic hands" would ruin the imported Italian leather.
“Mrs. Sterling,” the receiver nodded with formal, bureaucratic respect—a respect Derek had spent years denying me in public and private alike. “As of 10:00 AM, pursuant to federal bankruptcy docket 448-B and the emergency liquidation motion filed by Sterling & Vance, you are formally recognized as the controlling majority shareholder and executive director of the restructured corporate assets.”
A collective gasp rippled through the trembling employees huddled in the corner.
One of Derek’s sycophantic vice presidents, a man named Henderson who had spent three years laughing at Derek’s condescending jokes about my "simple family," staggered forward, his face drained of all color.
“Wait—wait a minute!” Henderson stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. “She’s just a housewife! She doesn't know anything about server architecture, venture capital, or algorithmic trading! This company belongs to Derek! He built this!”
Daniel didn't even look up from his legal pad. “Mr. Henderson, Derek is currently sitting in a holding cell downtown answering to six counts of wire fraud, securities falsification, and international tax evasion. If you speak another word questioning my sister’s executive credentials, I’ll personally add your name to the co-conspirator indictment list before you can reach the elevator.”
Henderson slammed his mouth shut so hard his teeth clicked, stumbling backward and collapsing into a chair as if he had been physically struck.
I stood up slowly, smoothing down the lapel of my tailored blazer—a garment I had purchased that very morning during a quiet trip to the financial district with Marcus.
“Listen to me very carefully,” I said, my voice carrying a quiet, resonant authority that commanded absolute silence across the massive room. “Apex Innovations as you knew it is dead. The corruption, the fraudulent balance sheets, the toxic culture of intimidation and mistreatment—it ends today. Those of you who wish to stay and do honest work under the new restructuring will have your contracts reviewed by my brother Marcus by the end of the day. Those of you who were complicit in Derek’s illegal activities... well, Ethan has already downloaded every keystroke, email, and deleted file from your workstations.”

I walked slowly toward the panoramic window, looking out over the sprawling city where Derek had once strutted like a god, completely unaware that his entire kingdom was built on sand.
“Clear your desks by five o’clock,” I added softly. “Meeting adjourned.”
