Chapter 6 - THE MORNING AFTER THE PURGE: BREAKFAST AMONG THE RUINS OF A LIQUIDATED LIFE

The golden light of dawn streamed through the floor-to-ceiling kitchen windows, illuminating the gleaming marble countertops where Vanessa’s shredded silver dress had recently lay like a corpse of broken vanity.
That dress was gone now, swept away into the garbage bin by Noah alongside Derek’s discarded designer suits and half-empty bottles of overpriced cologne.
Sophie padded down the stairs in her pastel pink pajama bottoms, her bare feet padding softly against the hardwood floors, rubbing her sleepy eyes as the rich, buttery scent of maple syrup and vanilla hit her senses.
“Mommy, it smells so good,” she murmured, climbing onto a barstool that Derek’s pathetic presence had once polluted.
“Special day calls for special breakfast, sweetheart,” I said, flipping a golden-brown pancake on the oversized griddle and sliding it onto her plate with a dusting of powdered sugar and fresh strawberries.
As if on cue, the kitchen door swung open, and my five brothers walked in without knocking, exactly as they had done every Sunday of our childhood, bringing with them that familiar aura of absolute invincibility.
Daniel carried a stack of fresh morning newspapers under his arm, while Marcus held two large cardboard trays of artisanal coffee from the downtown roastery Derek could never afford to frequent.
“Morning, Princess Sophie,” Marcus said warmly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head as he slid a cup of hot chocolate with extra marshmallows across the counter to her. “How’s our favorite niece doing today?”
“Much better now that the mean man is gone,” Sophie beamed, taking a huge bite of pancake with strawberry syrup smeared across her cheek.
Ethan slid onto the stool next to her, pulling his rugged tablet back out of his leather satchel. “Good, because the digital cleanup is already ninety-eight percent complete. All of Derek’s administrative privileges have been revoked across every server farm he thought he owned. His former CTO has already agreed to testify in exchange for immunity, and the SEC just filed a formal asset freeze on his personal offshore accounts in the Caymans.”
Luke poured himself a black coffee, leaning against the doorframe with the quiet, predatory grace of an apex predator taking a morning stroll through a newly conquered territory. “The Department of Justice’s economic crimes division formally indicted him twenty minutes ago at his downtown loft. He won't even make it to bail hearing without federal marshals breathing down his neck.”
I poured a cup of coffee for myself, leaning against the counter and looking around the sprawling kitchen that was finally, truly ours.
“So, what happens to Apex Innovations now?” I asked, looking directly at Daniel.
Daniel took a slow sip of his coffee, a thin, satisfied smile playing at the corners of his mouth. “Apex Innovations is currently insolvent. Its patents have been flagged for fraud, its credit lines have been called in by Marcus’s bank, and its corporate shell is being liquidated as we speak. As the primary creditor and the legal counsel for the acquiring party—which, by the way, is our family’s private holding company—we are going to restructure the entire enterprise from the ground up.”
Marcus tapped the leather briefcase he had dropped onto the floor the night before. “And guess who owns fifty-one percent of the newly restructured holding company, Claire?”
I blinked, staring at my brother in astonishment. “Me?”
“You,” Daniel nodded firmly. “Derek signed away all marital assets, including your joint holdings, under duress of federal prosecution. Since you were technically a silent co-signer on his initial startup incorporation documents a decade ago—a detail his arrogant ego made him forget to legally sever—the courts recognize you as the primary rightful inheritor of the company’s clean intellectual property.”
I let out a breath I didn't realize I had been holding, the full weight of a decade of subservience, gaslighting, and emotional abuse finally evaporating into the morning air.

“You’re a billionaire, Mommy?” Sophie asked, her big eyes wide with innocent wonder as she looked up from her pancakes.
“Well, sweetheart,” I smiled, wiping a stray drop of syrup from her chin. “Let’s just say Mommy’s child support payments are going to be a little more substantial than Derek anticipated.”
