Chapter 5 - The Midnight Warrant

At one-fifteen in the morning, the heavy service doors of the sixty-fourth floor shuddered under the impact of a hydraulic ram.

The alarms in the penthouse did not wail with loud sirens; instead, amber warning lights pulsed silently along the ceiling moldings.

Luca stepped into the study, carrying a customized tactical shotgun, his vest strapped tight over his chest.

"Chicago Police Department tactical unit is at the outer security gate," Luca reported calmly.

"Commander Higgins is leading them personally."

"They have an emergency entry order signed by Judge Caldwell twenty minutes ago."

Claire stood up from the armchair, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Julian did this," she said, her voice rising with panic.

"He bought a judge."

"They're going to take me under the pretense of a mental health hold."

"Once I'm in county hospital custody, Julian’s doctors will sedate me and declare me incompetent."

Dante picked up his jacket, sliding his arms into the sleeves with unhurried precision.

He adjusted his cuffs, his face displaying the terrifying calm of an apex predator preparing for battle.

"No one leaves this floor without my permission," Dante said.

"Luca, activate the security cameras and open the inner blast doors."

"Let Commander Higgins see who he is dealing with."

Claire followed Dante down the long marble hallway toward the penthouse's double-steel entrance doors.

Outside the reinforced glass partition, six heavily armed SWAT officers stood with assault rifles raised.

Commander Higgins stood in front, wearing a tactical windbreaker with CPD gold badges pinned to his collar.

Beside him stood Julian Thorne, his tuxedo immaculate, flanked by two corporate attorneys holding thick manila folders.

Dante pressed the intercom button on the wall.

"You are creating a substantial disturbance on private residential property, Higgins," Dante said smoothly.

"State your legal justification before my attorneys file federal civil rights violations against your precinct."

Higgins stepped up to the glass, holding up a laminated court order.

"We have an emergency ex-parte protective custody order for Claire Whitmore, issued under the Illinois Mental Health Code."

"Her legal guardian and father, Grant Whitmore, has reported her abducted and incapacitated."

"Open the doors, Romano, or we will breach using explosive charges."

Julian stepped forward, looking through the reinforced glass directly at Claire.

His face was a masterpiece of feigned heartbreak and desperate concern.

"Claire, darling, please," Julian pleaded, his voice projected through the external speaker.

"Come out."

"You are sick, sweetheart."

"You're having a severe manic break."

"Dante Romano is a dangerous felon using your condition to extort our families."

"Just walk through the doors, and we will take you to Dr. Mercer's private facility in Lake Forest."

"Everything will be fine, my love."

Claire stared at him through the thick glass.

She looked at his manicured hands, his expensive suit, and the cold, dead calculation hiding behind his pleading blue eyes.

A wave of hot, electric rage washed away the last traces of her fear.

She stepped past Luca.

She walked directly up to the glass partition, standing beside Dante.

"Open the door, Dante," Claire said clearly.

Dante looked at her, his dark eyebrows lifting slightly.

"Claire, once that seal is broken, Higgins will attempt to place physical hands on you."

"Open the door," she repeated, her voice ringing with the authority of a woman who had finally found her backbone.

"I want the cameras to see every single second of this."

Dante signaled Luca with a slight flick of two fingers.

Luca pressed the release code on the wall panel.

With a heavy pneumatic hiss, the reinforced steel doors slid open into the wall recesses.

Commander Higgins immediately stepped forward, reaching for his handcuffs.

"Miss Whitmore, step behind me for your own protection—"

"Take your hand off your belt, Commander Higgins," Claire said, her voice sharp as a guillotine blade.

Higgins froze, startled by the commanding tone coming from a woman reported to be in a psychotic fugue.

Claire turned her eyes directly onto Julian Thorne.

Julian smiled softly, taking a step toward her with outstretched arms.

"Claire, thank God—"

Before Julian could touch her, Claire brought her right hand back and struck him across the face with all the strength in her body.

The crack of skin against skin echoed down the corridor like a gunshot.

Julian stumbled back two steps, clutching his reddening cheek, his polite mask shattering into pure shock.

"Do not dare touch me with the hands you used to forge my mother's signature," Claire said, her voice vibrating with absolute contempt.

"I am not having a breakdown, Julian."

"I am not mentally incapacitated."

"And I am certainly not your fiancée."

Julian's eyes darkened with murderous fury, the social gentleman disappearing entirely.

"Higgins," Julian snarled, dropping the act completely.

"Restrain her."

"She is clearly violent and delusional."

"Touch her, Higgins," Dante's voice cut through the air like a sub-zero blade.

"And I will have thirty federal marshals at your precinct by sunrise investigating the half-million dollars Julian Thorne deposited into your wife's offshore account in the Bahamas."

Higgins went completely white, his arm dropping to his side as if struck by lightning.

"You're bluffing, Romano," Julian snapped, though a bead of sweat appeared on his temple.

"I don't bluff in my own home, Julian," Dante replied, stepping shoulder-to-shoulder with Claire.

"Every camera on this floor is broadcasting live to my legal team and three federal prosecutors."

"Claire is staying here."

"And if any man wearing a badge steps across this threshold without a federal warrant signed by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, he will leave this building in an ambulance."

Julian stared at Dante, then at Claire, realizing that his quick, quiet abduction had failed completely.

"This isn't over, Claire," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with venomous promise.

"By tomorrow morning, your name will be worthless in this town."

May you like

"We will see who is worthless when the vaults open, Julian," Claire answered without blinking.

"Now get the hell out of my sight."
