Chapter 9 - Fire on the Chicago River

The emergency red lamps painted the concrete vault corridor in the color of fresh blood.
Dante Romano did not panic; his pulse remained as cold and calculated as ice water.
He drew his Kimber forty-five from beneath his coat, racking the slide with a clean, metallic snap.
"Luca," Dante spoke into his encrypted lapel microphone.
"Report on the street level."
Luca’s voice crackled through the earpiece, accompanied by the distinct staccato rattle of automatic gunfire echoing off stone.
"Two heavy assault vehicles breached the outer perimeter, boss."
"These aren't local cops or private security guards."
"They're foreign contractors carrying suppressed carbines and wearing unmarked black body armor."
"Julian’s father pulled his private offshore security unit out of the port terminals."
"They’ve sealed the primary street exits on LaSalle."
"Understood," Dante replied with absolute calm.
"Hold the rotunda foyer for three minutes."
"We are taking the historic freight tunnel under the river."
Dante turned toward Arthur Pendelton, who was standing beside the vault control console with keys shaking in his hands.
"Arthur, open the lower ventilation hatch leading to the underground freight railway tunnels."
"Mr. Romano, that tunnel hasn't been used since the nineteen-fifties flood," Arthur stammered.
"It runs directly beneath the river toward the old coal intake docks on Wacker Drive."
"Open it right now, Arthur," Dante commanded without raising his voice.
Arthur quickly entered a six-digit override code into the ancient mechanical wheel on the rear vault wall.
With a heavy metallic groan, a circular blast hatch swung open, revealing a downward-sloping tunnel lined with exposed brick and rusted cast-iron pipes.
The damp smell of river mud and cold coal dust wafted up from the darkness.
Dante grabbed the titanium briefcase containing Eleanor’s records with his left hand and took Claire’s arm with his right.
"Grant, get through that hatch first," Dante ordered.
Grant didn't hesitate; he scrambled through the circular opening like a frightened rat, dropping onto the muddy concrete below.
Claire looked at Dante, her hazel eyes shining with fierce adrenaline rather than fear.
"I know these tunnels," Claire said, her voice steady.
"My mother’s family built the foundation pilings for the Wacker Drive riverwalk."
"If we take the northern branch, it exits directly behind the municipal water intake station."
"That’s only three blocks from Whitmore Tower."
"Good," Dante said, a rare, wolfish smile touching the corners of his lips.
"Lead the way, heiress."
Claire dropped through the hatch, her riding boots sinking two inches into the wet silt of the old railway bed.
Dante followed immediately, turning back just long enough to dog the heavy steel hatch shut from the inside, cutting off any pursuit from the vault.
Behind them, through the thick steel plate, they could hear the muffled thuds of breaching charges detonating inside the rotunda above.
They moved swiftly through the narrow, vaulted brick corridor.
Dante’s tactical flashlight cut a sharp beam through the rising mist.
Above their heads, the heavy, rhythmic rumbling of early morning traffic on the LaSalle Street bridge vibrated through the masonry.
Water dripped steadily from the ceiling, splashing against Claire’s coat, but she never slowed her pace.
She ignored the sharp, throbbing ache in her injured knee, pushing forward through the darkness with stubborn, unyielding momentum.
Behind them, Grant was panting heavily, his dress shirt soaked in sweat and grime.
"They're going to kill us down here," Grant whimpered between ragged breaths.
"Julian won't stop until he has those papers."
"If you don't shut your mouth, Grant, I will leave you chained to a water main," Claire said without looking back.
Grant swallowed hard and pressed his lips together in terrified silence.
After four hundred yards of navigating the slick, decaying tunnel, they reached an iron spiral staircase leading upward toward a rusted steel grate.
Dante climbed the steps silently, his weapon held ready in his right hand.
He peeked through the iron slats.
The gray light of 7:45 AM was breaking over the Chicago River.
The municipal water intake station was quiet, surrounded by high chain-link fences and stacks of concrete maintenance barriers.
Parked beside the fence was a reinforced black Mercedes Sprinter van bearing the logo of Romano Logistics.
The rear doors of the van swung open, and Luca stepped out, holding an automatic rifle concealed beneath a long trench coat.
Dante pushed the iron grate open with his shoulder, helping Claire up into the chilly morning air.
"Luca," Dante said as they cleared the hatch.
"Casualties on LaSalle?"
"None of our men down, boss," Luca reported with a grim grin.
"We pinned Julian’s mercenaries inside the rotunda until the Chicago Police tactical teams arrived."
"Commander Higgins tried to take control of the crime scene, but the FBI field office intercepted the call."
"Higgins is currently sitting in the back of a federal cruiser answering questions about his wife's offshore accounts."
Claire took a deep breath of the freezing river air, looking up at the towering glass monolith of Whitmore Tower rising three blocks to the north.
The building was a fifty-story monument of reflective black glass and steel, catching the first pale rays of the morning sun.
"Julian is already inside," Claire said, her eyes locked on the penthouse floor of the tower.
"He will have the board assembled in the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor."
"The meeting is scheduled to begin at eight-thirty."
Dante opened the side door of the Sprinter van, motioning for her to climb inside.
Inside the vehicle was a complete mobile command unit with secure monitors, tactical vests, and fresh clothing.
"He thinks he won the battle on LaSalle Street," Dante said, setting the titanium briefcase onto the interior desk.
"He thinks we are trapped beneath twenty feet of steel in the depository vault."
Dante turned toward Claire, his dark eyes burning with ruthless anticipation.

"We are going to walk through the front doors of Whitmore Tower."
"And we are going to burn Julian Thorne’s empire to the ground in front of every camera in this city."
