Chapter 8 - The Bloodline Treason

The fluorescent bulbs inside Vault Conference Room B hummed with low, hypnotic intensity.
Grant Whitmore stood against the corner of the concrete wall, clutching his elbows like an accused man awaiting execution.
Dante Romano pulled out a portable micro-cassette recorder from his inside pocket and placed it beside the green felt table.
Claire slid the first tape into the plastic deck and pressed the play button with a firm, unhesitating finger.
A momentary hiss of tape static filled the silence of the room.
Then, Eleanor Vance’s voice filled the concrete vault, clear, cultured, and devastatingly calm.
"My name is Eleanor Vance Whitmore."
"Today is September fourteenth, fourteen months before the projected maturity date of the South Side redevelopment notes."
"I am recording this testimony from my hospice suite at Northwestern Memorial Hospital."
"I have forty days left to live according to Dr. Mercer."
Claire gasped, her eyes snapping toward her father in immediate, sickening realization.
"Dr. Mercer," Claire whispered, her voice shaking with rage.
"Dr. Mercer was the doctor Julian Thorne insisted I be taken to last night."
Dante’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal comprehension.
"Julian didn't pick Dr. Mercer out of the phone book last night, Claire."
"Dr. Mercer has been Thorne Capital's personal executioner for corporate families for a decade."
The tape continued to roll, Eleanor's voice continuing with chilling clarity.
"Three days ago, I discovered that my husband, Grant, entered into an unauthorized credit agreement with Marcus Thorne."
"Grant lost eleven million dollars in offshore derivative trading run by Thorne’s unregulated syndicate in Macau."
"To cover the losses, Grant pledged twenty percent of Whitmore Development stock as collateral without my knowledge or board approval."
"Marcus Thorne then began using that debt instrument to force Grant into laundering overseas construction kickbacks through our municipal contracts."
"Grant believes that by marrying Claire to Marcus's son, Julian, the debt will be forgiven and the family will be saved."
"Grant is a weak, cowardly fool."
Grant let out a choking sob from the corner of the wall, burying his face in his trembling hands.
"Claire, please," Grant whimpered.
"I was trying to keep our homes."
"I was trying to make sure you had an inheritance left when Eleanor passed."
"Shut your mouth, Grant," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that made the air in the vault freeze.
"Listen to the woman you murdered with your cowardice."
The tape player clicked softly as Eleanor’s voice returned to the room.
"Julian Thorne was groomed by his father to be an apex financial parasite."
"He does not love Claire."
"He views her as an administrative signature required to absorb four hundred million dollars in cartel liabilities into our pristine corporate foundation."
"Once the merger is ratified, Thorne Capital will file Chapter Eleven bankruptcy on Whitmore Development within eighteen months."
"Julian will strip every asset my father built, liquidate the land trusts, and leave Claire with nothing but federal subpoenas and ruin."
"Therefore, under Section 14B of the irrevocable Vance Trust, I have instituted a dead-man trigger."
Claire turned the page of the legal charter, her fingers tracing the red wax seal at the bottom of the parchment.
"Section 14B," Claire read aloud, her voice ringing with the clarity of a church bell on Sunday morning.
"In the event that Grant Whitmore attempts to coerce, transfer, or encumber the voting shares of Claire Eleanor Whitmore without her independent written consent..."
"...all voting authority, executive officer appointments, and remaining equity shares held by Grant Whitmore are automatically revoked with immediate prejudice."
"...and sixty percent of all total voting rights of Whitmore-Vance Development revert solely and perpetually to Claire Eleanor Whitmore."
Claire lifted her gaze from the document and looked directly at her trembling father.
"You didn't have twenty percent to sell to Julian, did you, Father?"
Grant slipped down the concrete wall, dropping to his knees on the cold vault floor.
"I didn't know," Grant sobbed, tears spilling over his wrinkled cheeks.
"Eleanor hid the trust amendments inside this box."
"Julian told me that if I delivered your signature on the wedding register, he would tear up my debt notes."
"He threatened to leak the Macau trading files to the Wall Street Journal if you didn't marry him tonight."
"He said he would make sure I died in a state penitentiary."
Dante walked over to Grant Whitmore, standing over the broken billionaire like a judge passing final sentence.
"You traded your daughter's life to save your own reputation, Grant."
"You let three armed mercenaries hunt her through my hotel loading dock because you were afraid of the news cycle."
"You are not a businessman."
"You are a parasite who lived off Eleanor Vance's intellect until she died, and then you tried to feed on her daughter."
Dante reached down, grabbed Grant by his tuxedo collar, and hoisted him to his feet with one arm.
"Stand up on your own feet."
"You are going to walk out of this vault, you are going to get into my car, and you are going to do exactly what Claire tells you to do."
"Or I will leave you on the curb outside Julian Thorne's office with your debt files pinned to your chest."
Grant nodded violently, his spirit completely obliterated.
Claire carefully placed the cassettes, the stock certificates, and the handwritten ledger inside Dante’s reinforced titanium briefcase.
She snapped the combination locks shut with two distinct, metallic thuds.
"We have everything we need, Dante," Claire said, picking up the briefcase.
"The annual shareholder assembly at Whitmore Tower begins at nine o'clock."
"Julian’s board meeting is scheduled for the exact same hour."
Before Dante could respond, the fluorescent lights inside the vault flickered violently twice and died.
The subterranean room was instantly plunged into pitch-black darkness.
A second later, the dull red emergency backup lamps hummed to life along the concrete ceiling.
From the corridor outside, the heavy hydraulic blast doors began to grind shut with an automated, screaming alarm.
The depository's emergency lockdown system had been manually tripped from the street level above.
Arthur Pendelton’s voice crackled through the wall intercom, breathless and trembling with sheer panic.
"Mr. Romano, get out of the lower vault immediately."
"There are two armored tactical trucks blocking the LaSalle Street entrance."
May you like
"Armed men with tactical rifles are breaching the rotunda doors right now."
"They just cut the main municipal power lines to the entire block."
