Chapter 1 - The Echo of Crying in the Hallway of Broken Dreams

The heavy oak doors of the grand mansion usually echoed with the sweet sound of Mia practicing her violin notes for the upcoming annual academy gala.

Today, however, the air was thick with a suffocating tension that could be cut with the very silver scissors Vanessa now held in her manicured hand.

Mia stood in front of the ornate gilded mirror in the upstairs hallway, gently smoothing down the cascading curls of her dark hair that her late mother used to brush every single night before bed.

Her sparkling pink dress, custom-ordered from Paris months in advance, shimmered under the crystal chandelier like a promise of a magical evening where she would finally shine on stage.

Her little pink silk ribbon, tied into a flawless bow by her father’s loving hands just ten minutes prior, rested gently atop her head as the crowning glory of her angelic appearance.

Downstairs, the low murmur of wealthy guests and distinguished board members of the academy filled the lavish living room, waiting patiently for the young prodigy to descend the sweeping staircase.

Vanessa, standing at the top of the landing with eyes full of a venomous green envy, watched Mia admire her own reflection with a sickeningly sweet smile that didn't reach her cold, dead eyes.

Vanessa had spent weeks trying to sabotage Mia’s violin, loosening the bridge and rubbing rosin dust into the pegs, but somehow the little girl had managed to fix every single trap with quiet, resilient grace.

Realizing that subtle sabotage would no longer work against a talent as pure and unyielding as Mia’s, Vanessa decided to resort to a cruelty so primal and devastating that it would permanently scar the child's soul.

Without warning, Vanessa lunged forward like a striking viper, her long acrylic fingernails burying themselves painfully into the soft roots of Mia’s meticulously styled hair.

Mia gasped in absolute shock, the breath knocked entirely out of her lungs as she was forcefully yanked backward away from the safety of the mirror and into the open expanse of the hallway.

"Let go! Please, Vanessa, you're hurting me!" Mia shrieked, her tiny voice cracking with raw terror as she clawed desperately at Vanessa’s unyielding grip on her scalp.

"Shut your ungrateful mouth, you little parasite!" Vanessa hissed through clenched teeth, her face contorting into a mask of pure demonic fury as she dragged the screaming child toward the top of the grand staircase.

The guests below suddenly stopped their polite conversations, tilting their heads upward in confusion as the violent scuffle echoed loudly through the high-domed ceiling of the foyer.

Mia’s pink ribbon came untied, fluttering down like a wounded butterfly through the air before landing softly on the plush Persian rug of the stairs, ignored and trampled by the ensuing violence.

Vanessa dragged the sobbing girl across the upper landing, ignoring the pathetic whimpers and the frantic twisting of Mia’s small body trying to break free from the ironclad hold.

"You always think you're the star of every room, don't you? Always playing the victim, always stealing the spotlight from the people who actually built this family!" Vanessa spat venomously, her voice dripping with years of pent-up resentment.

With a cruel, violent jerk, Vanessa hauled Mia right over the threshold of the living room, throwing her roughly to her knees in plain sight of the dozen shocked elites and family friends gathered below.

The room went dead silent, the ambient jazz music grinding to an abrupt halt as every single pair of eyes in the room locked onto the horrifying scene unfolding on the upper balcony overlooking the main floor.

Mia pressed her hands against the polished hardwood floor, her knees bruised and her pink dress stained with dust, sobbing uncontrollably as she looked up through a blur of tears at the towering figure of her stepmother.

Vanessa stood triumphantly over the helpless child, her chest heaving with adrenaline, her lips curled into a sickening sneer of absolute triumph as she raised the heavy silver sewing scissors high into the air.

The sharp blades gleamed maliciously under the bright lights, reflecting the horrified faces of the guests who were too paralyzed by shock to even utter a single word of intervention.

"No! Not my hair! Mommy said it was my crown! Please, don't cut it, I'll give you my dress, I'll give you my violin, just please don't touch my hair!" Mia screamed, her voice reaching a pitch of pure, agonizing despair.

Vanessa ignored the desperate plea entirely, her face devoid of any human empathy as she grabbed a thick, generous handful of Mia’s long, beautiful dark hair near the crown of her head and pulled it taut like a violin string.

With one swift, sickeningly loud snip, the cold metal blades sliced effortlessly through the thick strands of hair, severing months of growth and cherished memories in a fraction of a second.

A heavy, agonizing sigh of shock echoed collectively through the gathered crowd below, several women instinctively covering their mouths with their trembling hands in sheer disbelief at the barbaric act.

Mia reached up with her tiny, shaking hands, her fingers instantly brushing against the jagged, uneven stubble left on the right side of her head where her gorgeous locks used to cascade so gracefully.

With a heartbreaking wail that pierced the heavy silence of the mansion, Mia collapsed entirely onto the floor, her small frame convulsing with heavy sobs as she gathered the fallen clump of hair into her palms.

The dark strands felt heavy and dead in her tiny hands, a physical manifestation of her shattered confidence and the brutal destruction of her most anticipated childhood milestone.

"Look at you now," Vanessa mocked cruelly, letting the heavy silver scissors dangle loosely from her fingertips while she stared down at the broken child with utter contempt in her narrowed eyes.

"You think you’re prettier than me? You think a raggedy orphan like you will ever truly belong in this family and steal the attention away from my biological children? You are nothing without me!" Vanessa shouted down at the weeping girl.

The guests began to murmur anxiously among themselves, realizing the horrifying gravity of what they had just witnessed, yet none of them dared to step forward due to their financial ties to the household patriarch.

Mia rocked back and forth on the cold floor, cradling her ruined hair against her chest like a mother holding a deceased child, her spirit visibly breaking into a million irreparable pieces in real-time.

Vanessa stood over her victim with her chin held high, basking in the wicked satisfaction of having successfully humiliated the little girl right before her grand musical debut at the city academy.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the main entrance of the living room swung open with a loud, resounding bang that made everyone in the room jump in terror.

Adrian, Mia’s father and the head of the powerful corporate empire that bore his family name, stepped inside, his sharp eyes scanning the room with a commanding presence that instantly silenced the nervous whispers.

He had rushed back from an urgent board meeting specifically to walk his beloved daughter to her performance, holding a small velvet box containing a delicate silver necklace he intended to gift her before she took the stage.

Adrian took off his expensive overcoat and handed it to the butler, expecting to hear the cheerful sound of classical violin scales drifting down from the second-floor landing.

Instead, the suffocating silence of the room struck him like a physical blow, making him freeze in his tracks as he felt an unnatural, heavy dread settle heavily over his broad shoulders.

He looked up toward the balcony, and his warm, expectant expression instantly shattered into a terrifying, dark mask of confusion as his eyes registered the disturbing tableau before him.

He saw the heavy silver scissors still clutched in Vanessa’s sweating, trembling hand, the metal reflecting the harsh chandelier lights with an accusing gleam.

He saw his little girl, his precious Mia, curled up in a pathetic, sobbing heap on the polished floor, her pink dress stained and her tiny shoulders shaking with uncontrollable, grief-stricken agony.

And then, his horrified gaze dropped to the floor directly beside Vanessa’s designer heels, where a thick, dark clump of gorgeous hair lay scattered across the pristine hardwood like a battlefield casualty.

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat, his heart missing a vital beat as the full, devastating reality of the cruel violation crashed down upon his mind with the force of a tidal wave.

The loving father inside him died a violent death in that exact microsecond, replaced entirely by an elemental, bottomless rage that burned hotter than the fires of hell itself.

Vanessa, noticing the sudden influx of heavy silence and the towering silhouette of her husband standing frozen near the entrance, turned around slowly with a sickeningly sweet, rehearsed smile plastered across her face.

"Oh, Adrian, darling! You’re finally home! You won't believe what happened—the poor little thing had an absolute hysterical fit and accidentally ruined her own hair with some craft scissors she found!" Vanessa lied smoothly, her voice dripping with fake maternal concern.
